This book uses graphics to introduce the basic concepts ofgeographic information systems (GIS). It does not providedetailed explanations but is very good at getting across the important concepts. A useful book for beginners.

This book is the 2nd edition, published in 2001. However, I find the concepts very clearly explained and still very relevant to anyone learning GIS today (2012) as I am. Loads of diagrams make the written explanations crystal clear; it is very well organised, easy to read, leaves out all but essential jargon (and explains any necessary jargon). It is a compulsory key text set for part of my TAFE course in GIS, here in Australia, and I wish I had had it last year when I was doing introductory units. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because it would be nice if there were an up-to-date 3rd edition, so you could get some idea of what has changed in the last decade, and anything new that one should know of a fundamental nature (I am sure that there are at least a few important things). The book was the right price for a second-hand book, in exactly the condition I expected from the description, which was excellent. As I couldn't source the book in Australia, I ordered it through in the States, and was too mean to pay for the expensive fast delivery, so I paid for ordinary mail ($15) which was estimated to take more than 6 weeks. It came in 3, way before I was expecting it - great quick service. I am very happy with my purchase.

Worked well for my daughter while in school.
