Lionel FasTrack Model Railroads: The Easy Way To Build A Realistic Lionel Layout

As model railroaders began demanding ever-greater realism, Lionel responded in 2004 with its FasTrack system featuring an integrated roadbed, scale-sized ties, and a less-obvious center rail. Veteran hobby author Bob Schleicher follows up his The Lionel FasTrack Book with a closer, more detailed look at Lionel’s revolutionary O-gauge system. This guide gives enthusiasts a deeper sense of how to take advantage of the FasTrack’s ease of use and unprecedented realism in large-scale model railroading. The book includes 150 color photos and track diagrams for 10 scenicked FasTrack layouts ranging from 6x6-foot tabletop models to an 11x30-foot scale-size empire. Schleicher also provides instructions for building tables to support the layouts, advice for creating both rural and urban scenery, and an appendix of recommended suppliers.

With Youtube and the plethora of online resources, I am still mystified as to why any publisher would put something this weak together. There are live demonstration videos all over Youtube on Scenery and track Layout that are far more informative. The track plans in this book are so huge, the cost in Fastrack alone is out of the reach of most people monetarily. The smaller layouts (which most people are stuck with due to space and budget) are un-imaginative and offer no start points. This book seems to be more a fancy brochure for Lionel products with scenery building in the back. One thing most people getting into Model Railroading need is more detail on wiring which is barely covered - The product info for Legacy and TMCC might even be more detailed than this book, but again the beginners are just trying to get creative in small space conventionally. Why not hook the beginners? They'll upgrade as they get better. When you are sitting with several trains, enough track and switches to make a few blocks conventionally - give some detail. There are probably more conventional operators out there with two or three trains that could use better detail on wiring that would give them confidence later to move up to Legacy. How about structure lighting - use of LEDs? Building mountains as described in the back are all over the internet, how about covering some things that are harder to find info on?There are a couple pages dedicated to club layouts, why? Clubs don't need this book. Clearly this book was written to the wrong audience. Writing a book for guys covered in Extruded Foam shavings by guys covered in Extruded Foam Shavings isn't going to help the people who need a book like this the most.Is the book totally worthless? No.
