The best resource I have ever seen detailing the different perennials, how and where to plant, propagation, attractive flower companions and more. The authors detail each plant and provide a list of varities with their recomendations listed in a five star rating system. I have been a serious gardner for 10 years and I have learned more from this book than any other source!
While perhaps suitable for a beginning gardener, this book omits many useful and common species while including obscure cultivars that are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Important cultural facts are often missing or buried in the cookie-cutter approach to each species. This book has no index, the omission of which may point to hasty editing. More experienced gardeners should look at books written by Steven Still.
I've bought and borrowed numerous books regarding perennials. None has been so complete and well illustrated. Each plant species has varieties listed as well as planting, mulching, pruning, dividing techniques and advice. As an avid perennial gardener, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Kudos to the authors!
This book lets you know which perennials you can buy and grow in cold climates. It is a must for anyone in the Northern Areas of 20 degree's below 0 even in Canada. It shows the pictures of the flowers and where they will grow best for cold weather. It also shows you the best variety to buy and where you can order them, plant them and how to do it. It is a must for cold weather climates.
This book is a very complete guide for growing perennials in cold climates. It has lots of pictures, lists best varieties of plants, highlights best performing perennials, provides resources to obtain plants, how to plant and care for the plants, as well as methods of propagation. Best of all, it leaves out plants that won't thrive where winters get below -20 degrees, saving frustration and wasted money. It's a wonderful reference book!
A wonderfully organized, beautifully presented book that will delight anyone limited to a few frenzied months of gardening. I will dream with this book all winter; and dig, deadhead and divide with it all summer.
Growing Perennials in Cold Climates presents a remarkable level of detail about each type of plants. In 400+plus pages this book covers just over 50 types of perennials. For many of them, this book presents a better level of detail than the USDA manual on Woody Plants in its coverage of choosing sites, soils, and companion plants. The discussions of how to care for the plants go beyond the basics to include discussions of staking, deadheading and winter protection. The discussions of propagation are superb. The level of detail provides such a sense of expertise that some readers will wish for companion books that cover more types of perennials, or that provide more detail to separate the treatment of specific species of ferns, hostas, narcissus, lilies or peonies. Gardeners who aspire to excellence will be proud to carry this book on their shelves.
This is an excellent book for gardeners in USDA Zones 3b through 5b east of the 100th meridian. While one can certainly quarrel with which genera are covered, within its scope this book offers very solid advice. No similar reference offers as much breadth regarding specific cultivars. I hope the publisher will offer an expanded (including Thalictrums and Polygonatums!) and updated second edition in the near future. If you are a beginning to intermediate gardener this book is definitely worth having.
