If you are thinking of setting up a saltwater reef tank, (or fish only) then this is the book for you. I have probably 75% of the saltwater reef aquarium books out there, so I've done a lot of reading. This book has everything you need to know and more. All written in easy to understand language with a sense of humor! It's a fun and interesting read.Having been in this hobby for eight years now, I'm no longer considered a newbie, but neither am I considered an advanced aquarist. With that being said, I would recommend this book to both newly interested and established hobbyists. The author takes you through purchasing your first tank, and delves into every aspect of the setup, from equipment needed, to testing, to finally stocking, and everything in between. If you have any questions about starting in this hobby, you will get the answers in this book. Good reading and very informative. Kudos to Al Ulrich for making our hobby not so complicated. It was a pleasure reading your book.
This is one of the best how to saltwater aquarium books I have read. It gives you straight forward information to set up and maintain a reef tank or fish only tank. I found that the writing style made it easy for the reader to understand what the author was trying to communicate. Far too often salt water aquarium books become extremely technical and the reader has to fight off the upcoming snooze fest. The author is not concerned with telling you how much he knows like so many others seem to be doing. He is more concerned with communicated what you should know. Whether you are a beginning aquarist, advanced aquarist or somewhere in between you will enjoy this book. I felt like I was hanging out with a fellow hobbyist and we were talking shop. Great book Al hope you will write another one.
I got started in the saltwater aquarium hobby approximately 5 months ago. And this book I have to admit helped me along those five months. It's a great guide for both novice and advanced aquarist's alike. It's simple to understand which is very important for the beginner or layman. And as you can see by the included photo. My own Marine Reef Aquarium is coming along just fine!
Great book. As a “newbie I read a lot of books about saltwater aquariums and after several pages you realise they are more or less all the same. This one is different. All the “mandatory” information is there but the approach is not as theoretical with hard to understand science. In addition, it’s written with humor so it makes it entertaining which is not always the case with that kind of books that often sound like school manual. If you’re new to the hobby or want to get general knowledge about salt aquarium and you’re looking for a book written with humor, this book is for you!
I recently decided to start a saltwater tank and bought a Biocube 29. During my initial days of research, I combed the internet and found way too much information out there that was either contradicting or confusing (for a noob). I started searching for a book to read that kept it simple as possible and presented a reasonable amount of information for the money. I decided to download a sample for this book, and really liked the tone (not overly serious and sometimes quite funny), plus it covered everything a noob like me should know (without major overkill or information that might scare you from starting the hobby), so I decided to buy it.I read the entire book over the course of a couple days and LOVED it! The information presented was full and easy to understand, and fun to read. I highly recommend this book if you're thinking about starting a hobby or are in the initial stages of starting. I've gone to it a few times afterwards to re-fresh also, so it's a good point of reference to have on hand later on. I joined the author's blog and found it to be informative and he's very open to help anybody that might have a quirky question (like me!). Totally worth $8...don't hesitate especially if you enjoy the sample Kindle provides.
He avoids boring lectures, and substitutes very corny humor. I winced at the latter, but his lack of the former kept me from falling asleep. When I finished the book (quite quickly, I might add), I realized that he had covered most of the major points a new aquarist needs to get into saltwater fish and reef keeping. Job well done!
I enjoyed reading this book, similar info as other reef books but it's written in an interesting tongue in cheek manner, if you enjoy that type of writing and want to learn about a reef tank this is a great resource.
As a beginner in the world of saltwater I've been reading every book I can find on the subject. This book and the other two written by the author have by far been the most informative and interesting as a beginner. The information in all three books have been to the point, realistic, and very easy to comprehend. A few books I've read you would need a degree in marine biology to understand but the author does a great job translating the never ending information needed to know for this hobby. I consider all three books a must read for anyone interested in the hobby, the authors knowledge mixed with his humor makes all three books an informative and easy read.
