This book is really a breath of fresh air in an industry of VERY stifling books! While not a colorful book, this is well written in a descriptive and easy way that renders it far more enjoyable and informative than half the other books that have first rate photos and "appear" to contain more information. I was looking for a book that would cover everything from inception to enjoyment with starting a salt water aquarium, and this book fit the bill. It also includes many up-to-date aquarium methods that other "guides" such as the Dummy's book don't offer, such as creating a refugium in the place of bio balls. For those of you who might have thought you were a "Dummy" in this hobby, please decide to be an "Idiot" instead!

This truly is one of the best saltwater aquarium book. I have read and I currently own 6 saltwater aquarium book, and this is the best and the number of books increases daily. It goes through every thing you need to know about aquariums from plumbing to lighting to compatible fish. I love the CD rom that came with it; it was unexpected, but so happy it came with it. If you're considering starting a saltwater aquarium this is your book. The dummies version is ok, but this is better. It gives you all kinds of recommendations on setting it up, and maintaining the system so you are not stuck with just one way. There are several ways to set up an aquarium, and several different products to use on various set ups, and this book goes through them all. I recommend purchasing this even if you have been in the aquarium business for a while; it is always nice to go back and have a reference for issues. It also tells you have to set up a quarantine tank, and care for unhealthy fish. Look no further for the right book. This one is the best other books i've spent $30 or more on still do not compare to this one. You will NOT regret this purchase.

Have read the entire book, some parts several times. Still in the planning stages of an aquarium. Per his advice, I've visited some local stores; there ARE definitely differences in quality among stores! Fortunately, the Twin Cities have some stores totally dedicated to marine aquaria. AND, as a result, some of his suggestions are contradicted by the locals: eg, filter socks don't seem to be essential in front of a protein skimmer; all they add is maintenance headaches. I like the fact that specific brands are mentioned. It's a great intro, and, no doubt due to length restrictions, some parts are glossed over. But, it's a compelling intro. I'm glad I got it. Just don't rely on it exclusively.

Great first book for getting you into the saltwater fish hobby. If you are looking for a comprehensive tell all book complete with pictures and diagrams, this is not it. But if you are in the planning stages of your saltwater setup this book is great. It goes over salinity, common fish, fish diseases and a bunch of helpful hints. I would suggest a specie specific book of fishes if that's what you are looking for. But as the title suggests, this book is so easy, an idiot could understand what's in it. Solid B+

This is a very good starting point for salt water aquariums. I would like to see more info on refugiums and hospital/quarantine tanks as they appear to be mandatory. I wish I had a PhD in plumbing too

Good information for beginners, however lacking in some areas. I would have appreciated more indepth coral information and possibly even some example aquarium setups. As in an arrangement of corals and fish for beginners. I know, i'm just knitpicking, but it would have been a nice addition.

I bought this book because I got tired of researching the net for certain critters for my tank and issues I had with the internet it was a constant back and forth, what works for some may not work for otheres scenario. This book was no more of the back and forth trying to find what works and what doesn't.

I love the book, it made it easy to understand and made a very complex subject matter approachable. I bought in unison with "Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies" and I recommend both. Excellent material well covered with simple yet detailed hand drawn images and alot of tips and tricks. I own a 90 reef tank now and love it but I always keep these as a reference because the material is that good. IF YOUR EVEN THINKING ABOUT A SALTWATER TANK BUY THE BOOKS this is an expensive hobby and these will pay for themselves 1000 times over. They both cover about the same material but in diff ways so its good to get both as there is a little diff in how its coverd
