Sophreena and Esme run a genealogical business and their new neighbor hires them to investigate what he inadvertently dug up on his new farm: an unknown man buried in a glass coffin with indications that he had been murdered decades earlier. The neighbor, River, wants to know what happened on his land. As he says, “I believe you share your space with the ghosts of those who came before. Their culture, their hopes, and fears, their living practices all sort of seep into the soil and grow in everything.” Sophreena agrees with this philosophy and starts investigating the farm’s previous owners in hopes of discovering the identity of the man in the glass coffin. As she begins looking into the family history of the farm’s previous owners, a young woman is suddenly found murdered on the edge of the mystery man’s grave.The rest of the book is about Sophreena’s investigation of both people, the man in the glass coffin and the young woman, as well as the history of of previous occupants of River’s farm. Her partner Esme has a smaller role in this story, though her special gift provides a significant look at the farm’s history. In the process they uncover many personal secrets that affect recent events and relationships. River was right and the past, like the man in the glass coffin, does not remain buried, with far-reaching repercussions as truth is revealed.Sophreena is a fascinating character, as are the people who surround her. Throughout the book various relationships move forward as they do in real life, producing a book that is entertaining and realistic. I enjoyed getting to know Sophreena and the people in her life. This was a good cozy mystery, with interesting and convoluted plots, from both the past and the present.
