This is the most surprising "paper back" that I have ever purchased! The 128 pages are packed full of full-color pictures, information, expert comments, and diagrams. I especially find the photos valuable for scanning and importing into my Garden Encyclopedia and Lansdcape Software. I fully intend to order other Dr. Hessayon books.
PROs: I am a Master Gardener, Landscape instructor, and trained arborist. What I love about this book are the great colored photos of plant materials, and the different leaf and flower forms on many varieties. Dr. Hessayon includes a great deal of information including pruning, planting, potential troubles, plants for various soils, some basic landscaping, propagation, etc. I am especially impressed with the section on conifers that has a list of their varied colors and shapes. Good overall information and splendid color photos make this book worthwhile. The book is about 9" x 7" and at 128 pages is easy to carry around to show my students and clients. I will carry this book in my vehicle as a handy reference.CONs: The reason for the 4 rating is the confusion in nomenclature. This book was written and published in England and you need to be aware that many of the common names of plants are vastly different than here in the U.S. Also, hardiness and heat zones are not mentioned, so you need to know your plant materials and their zones. I use Dr. Dirr's books as my final reference for all woody shrubs and trees.
I Like the Expert books, houseplants, flowers and vegetables I use alot and highly recommend also,Great book to identify bushes and trees. Helps on what to buy for shady spot or sunny plot in your yard. Very useful for landscaping your yard or any questions about a certain tree or shrub.
The Dr. D. G. Hessayon Expert books are great additions to a library. The Trees and Shrubs listed in the book are alphabetized with the botanical and common name. There are pictures and useful information on each tree and shrub listed. The book includes lots of horticultural information on the care of trees and shrubs. I like this book.
THE TREE & SHRUB EXPERT IS GREAT BUT WOULD HAVE LIKED ZONE INFO INCLUDED IN DISCRIPTION OTHERWISE VERY HELPFUL, VERY INFORMATIVE BOOK
