It covers how to plant, how to cultivate, and how to harvest both the seeds and the vegetables or flowers that tempted you to pay for those seeds in the first place.This book also competes effectively with Seeds of Woody Plants in North America and Seeds of Wildland Plants, the unexcelled "gold standard" reference sources compiled by the US Forest Service. The USFS books are somewhat more comprehensive in their coverage of American species, while The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds one has better presentation that will be more comfortable for newcomers to seed propagation.Most readers will find this book educational reading that expands their horizons, though its style is encyclopedic and it lacks plot. The gardeners in your life who already have plots outside with sunshine will appreciate this book as a fascinating gift.
Excellent book. I was very excited to get this and be able to harvest and procure my own non GMO seeds. I have several reference books I have acquired hoping to find the correct way to harvest, timing, overwintering and storage of seeds. Comparatively speaking I'd be better off wiping my you know what with the pages of those books!! The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds is thorough to the point that it's almost ridiculous. All you will need is this book, your garden and you're all set. And it arrived 4 days after I ordered it!! :) I will definitely order another copy for a friend of mine.
The information about saving and growing is good but would have been better had pictures of the seed pods, seeds and seedlings been included. Also, I would have preferred the book be alphabetical by all plants instead of being categorized.
If you are serious about saving seed and doing your own propagation, then this book is paramount for your library. The best book I have found so far.
Gough and Moore-Gough have teamed up to write another fine book, scholarly enough to delight a horticulturist but readable enough for hobbyists to keep handy. Beautifully illustrated and well indexed, it includes a good resource list for further reading. The appendix on "the history of seed saving and selling in North America" is a delightful addition.

The authors don't just explain how to save seeds though; they also explain how to use these seeds to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers in your own garden.If you just want to learn how to save seeds on a certain type of plant, you can easily find it in the reference portion of the guide. Not everything is listed, but the majority of the type of plants that you'd want to grow is included.This is an easy to read and follow guide. If you have a love for gardening already, or you want to get started, this is a really great book to read and reference back to often. I highly recommend this for sheer types of seeds, isolation techniques, pollination specifics, etc. It has raised my gardening skills to a new level. Only thing I would change is a few diagrams with botany lessons for newby flower pollinator/ seed savers. That said, love the huge variety of plants. Buy this book if you are interested at all in botany.
So far I have looked up 4 different flowers common to our neighborhood and not found them O.K.-let's say maybe I don't know ALL the nicknames for them, or the latin names mostly because I am not a botanist. Merely a gardening enthusiast. Well I could look for a photo, right? Wrong. Far too few of those. I can't find a passion flower for instance. Aren't those pretty common? So now I have to search on the internet and therefore defeat the purpose ( at least part of it), of purchasing this book. I want to love this book, I was so excited to get it but am disappointed.
