A friend found a copy of this book in a second hand book shop in 1984 and lent it to me. It was the best book on collecting (anything, not just antiques) I had read. What makes one object better than another, how to discern the difference, why when you purchase anything and you have a choice, choosing the better, more pleasing design can make a difference even if it is just a wooden spoon etc.I very reluctantly returned the book to my friend and thereafter fantasised that I would find my own copy one day in a second hand book shop.A few weeks ago I bought some beautiful John Pawson cutlery as a wedding present for my niece. It arrived at my office so I showed everyone this beautifuly designed cutlery and commented that using it every day would make a difference to your day. I said it reminded me of the message in this wonderful book which made a big impact on me in 1984 called the Impecunious Collectors Guide To Collecting American Antiques. A minute later my secretary had found a copy at . A few clicks on her key board and 10 days later a copy arrived at my office. I am so excited to have my own copy 27 years after first reading it.When I pulled it out of the envelop it fell open randomly at page page 87. There is a picture of a small New England table. I read Kirk's description and analysis of why this table is a great object. Plain and simple language, clear and direct, as good as I had remembered. The book is full of little pearls of design and collecting wisdom. It is a wonderful book and I am thrilled to at last have a copy of it.The friend who lent me the book in 1984 has gone on to become one of Australia's leading furniture designers with an international reputation. He says this book is an ongoing source of ideas and inspiration for him. It is a great book.
This is the one book you want to read if you want to learn to see.The ethic and attitude you assimilate from these pages will seem, after a while, to have been your own ideas - this is how sensible they are. This book will have you casting a critical eye on RevereWare and Volkswagens, comparing them to themselves from other times, and learning to see the differences, and knowing why one is superior to the other! There is discipline involved in the serious reading of this book, for there are tests in the back which force you to use what you have learned.Buy at least two copies. You will want at least one other person to have it too!
A different view of antiques, far from the refinished Chippendale as possible. There is beauty in the well loved well used furniture of the common folk
Good but not great.
The book is just not what I expected, so I was disappointed in it. I have looked at it one time and put it away.
