While the actual text book is one of the best resources for anyone in or learning about the fire service, the study guide is HORRIFIC. There is no way that the author of the text, John Norman, also formulated the questions in the study guide...if he did, he had better just stick with writing text books. There are numerous questions in the study guide that flat out give the wrong answer or wrong page number to find the correct answer. I could look past that, as no one is perfect (even though you would think prior to publishing it would be reviewed several times), however the questions in general are misleading and clearly written to trip you up. The questions are mentally draining as you have to read each scenario question several times just to determine what they are looking for. The goal of this study guide is clearly not to ensure you have a knowledge of the text and information, rather its design will frustrate you to no end. I am using this study guide for a promotional test, and quite frankly, it has been more detrimental than useful. While I feel I have a good grasp of the principles and information in the text, I find myself having to memorize ridiculous questions from the study guide in case they are on the written promotional test word for word. Not what a study guide should be designed to do...shame on those responsible for publishing such a horrible addition to a great text book.
The study guide seems to be from a previous edition as some of the wording in the questions is similar but not exacty what is in the 4th efition. The page references are not always correct either. The questions are thought provoking and cause you to want to look up the correct answers but the way some of the answers are written I doubt that it was career firefighter wiring them.
I agree with one of the other reviewers about the study guide being difficult to use. Many of the answers are wrong in the answer key. Many, many of the questions and answer choices are written badly. The only helpfullness I found in it was it made me look deep in the actual textbook for the answers and in doing so, could commit the details to memory. But, it is frustrating and a little exhausting picking through the question and answer choice wording. Also, it becomes tiresome looking up an answer to a question to make sure you answered it correctly because the answer key is wrong...All that being said, I am glad I used it because it forced me to get more familiar with the textbook information.
Great Read. Lots of Scenarios I could relate to. I've read it multiple times, after the first few times you can skip all the OTJ experience stories and get to the point. 2nd edition I've bought. Study guide is a great compliment, especially for promotional exams.
This booked has helped greatly in preparing for a promotiional test. I would recoomend this book to others who are preparing for a test.
