It's a 30 minute DVD of him saying the same things over and over again. The book is better. Save your money and pass on this DVD. There are no "nuggets" of information to be found here, at least not for the test I was taking.
I purchased this book as to hope to gain some valuable insight into assessment centers (for the fire service). After reading the book and going through the assessment, I can honestly say...nothingThe evaluators are extremely subjective and since this process takes place all over the (US) country have a very diverse approach to assessing your skills. Meaning, that one assessor might like your speaking ability and another grade you on your confidence level. Let's face it, no one knows how to handle every aspect of every emergency situation. What is key to any leader in the fire service is that you maintain a calm disposition in the face of adversity. One author's independent views on you should present yourself, what you should say is as subjective as the assessors themselves.Bottom line, if you can borrow it great. Read it. If you are thinking of buying it make sure you pick it up cheap.
As a 22 year veteran firefighter I've been through numerous assessments, some I was successful in and some not. This book is a very easy read, points out key topics and knowledge skills and abilities that assessment processes try to pull out of the candidates. In addition it has several good practice exercises to help anyone prepare for any type of assessment. It is layed out in a clear and concise manner so it is easy to understand and helps refine skills. If you have experience with assessment exercises or not you will gain a lot of information from this book! I will recommend it to family and friends. I tried to find a book like this many years ago, none were available. I applaud the author!
This is great start to for a fire officer to gauge there KSA's and to use to continue to build them. I purchased the book prior to attending the seminar to prepare for an upcoming Captains assessment if you are an inspiring, acting or current Fire Officer this is a good book. There are good experiences that you can use now and apply to your leadership philosophy or keep in your toolbox.
Great book!! I placed third on my first Captain's test. That's not a bad spot as I was the most junior firefighter to take the test. Unfortunately the city I work for decided to eliminate over 20 Captain's positions. I'll be taking the test again and will continue to use this book. Good luck to all.
Very basic guidance in the book. Easy to read through, at times it seems common sense, basic, or that no new information is being enlightened. I would recommend this book to anyone trying enhance interviewing skills, but I would look for more book out there on the same subject. Most of this information or the ideas of "Mastering and Assessment Center" or Interview can be found online.
Excellent book. Very helpful in our process. Purchased with the Terpak book. Highly recommended. Still awaiting results but pretty sure I'll be making Captain. Guessing I'm one of the top 5 based on preliminary scoring.
Unlike some of todays Fire Service, Chief Kastros understands leadership. This text clearly outlines a plan to test successfully and more importantly to be a successful leader after promotion.
