Anything by IFSTA has that same flair (or lack thereof). It has a lot of information, much of it good, much of it mind numbingly boring. But if you are like me, you have to read it, study it and take a test on it. If you are just interested in building construction and want to learn about it to become a better fire officer, there are better resouces out there. This book has information, you will learn, but it is painful.
The 3rd edition of Building Construction has been expanded to about double the previous edition and has been arranged differently to reach beyond the 5 building classifications used by the fire service and beyond focusing on building components such as doors and windows. The images offered as examples are a great improvement over the previous edition and focus on unique features of each building classification and the challenges that each pose to the fire service. Finally, this is not an engineering textbook, and should not be seen as such. It is a text that focuses on how buildings and their components act and react when exposed to fire. This is the most critical aspect of building construction for the fire service and IFSTA has provided another excellent, updated edition.
This book is a must read for anyone in the fire service. Yes some construction methods will not apply to your area, but it will give you a better idea of why construction methods are different in your area.
however, it was for my hubby as he had a lot of studying to do to be promoted to Captain on our municipality fire department. They take very grueling tests as part of the promotion process which I think is very important. He said this text book was very helpful to him and he had me look for all of his needed books and my first place to look is always .com! Thanks!!!
This text has less fluffy writing and more modern, less cheesy, graphics than prior books from IFSTA. It is refreshing and long over due. Good basic information on building construction from the fire service's perspective
A lot of valuable information for anyone is the fire service.I liked the material that was covered while taking the course that pertains to this book.I would recommend this book to anyone who is taking the Building Construction as it is related to the Fire Service Course. I would also recommend this book to Rookies.
Excellent book. I rented it from and it came in great condition. It is a great book and easy to read. If I had to do again, I would purchase this book and keep on my shelf.
