Bonsai With Japanese Maples

With their delicate foliage, seasonal color changes, and intricate pattern of branching, Japanese maples are among the most popular and suitable plants for bonsai design. In this long-awaited book, internationally renowned expert Peter Adams discusses both the specific horticultural needs of Japanese maples as bonsai subjects and illustrates proven techniques for creating and maintaining beautiful specimens. Although aimed at an audience that has some familiarity with bonsai techniques, the book deliberately shows a mix of bonsai at different stages in their training, so that less experienced enthusiasts can gain new ideas and inspiration from trees that are "works in progress." Much more than a mere "how-to" book, Bonsai with Japanese Maples is a forthright attempt to look at bonsai as art objects and to critique and assess them from an artist's perspective.

Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams has all you will ever need to know about maples in bonsai. Excellent colour photos, techniques are explained in adequate depth and it is well worth the price, I paid shipping to Australia just for this product. The only issue of concern is that one should read a basic bonsai book for a few clarifications on wording, that is to say it is written for an intermediate-bonsai audience.

Great detailed instructions on growing, training and styling bonsai maple trees. Excellent pictures and graphics. He covers several different techniques, some I had never seen discussed anywhere else. Good discussion of the general cultural conditions specific to maples. Suitable for any experience level.

I first saw this book as a bonsai student but it was already out of print. After years of searching, and seeing prices over $150, I am really happy to see it in re-print. It is the seminal Japanese maple book with many ideas that can be used for any deciduous tree. I strongly recommend it for anyone doing bonsai.

In the 25+ years that I have studied, practiced and taught Bonsai, this is one of the books that I have learned the most from. It specializes in different cultivars of Japanese maples, but the techniques described in this book can be applied to almost any species of tree! The book is extremely well done, very informative and very easy to understand. I received this book for Christmas last year, 2010, and even though I've been into Bonsai since 1986, I still found that it had MUCH to offer! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Bonsai whether your are just beginning or if you have already been at it for a while!

I was excited to see the title of this book, as I have hundreds of--probably one thousand--volunteer red Japanese maples (Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum') coming up in my yard. The book does give very clear directions on how to take a young maple (two or three years old) and shape it into a classic Bonsai shape, and there are several different styles. The instructions are clearly written and well illustrated. However, what I would like to have seen included additionally was something else that I know is also done, which is to take a somewhat more mature tree, of maybe seven or eight years old or more, which has not yet been trained at all, and to accentuate its idiosyncrasies. Still, for anyone who has access to young maples and is a novice to Bonsai (as I am), this book opens up a lot of possibilities. I am happy to have it.

For the topic and for the money, this is the best book going. Text is clear and meaningful, photos are sharp and true to color, and the sketches are far and away the best illustration of what the author is trying to get across with regard to future plans and designs for the subject tree. Excellent book.

This is an excellent book about Japanese Maple Bonsai. As others have noted, it isn't a beginners book but the reader is able to learn enough about JM Bonsai to make the book worth it. The photos are great and inspiring.

If you are interested in the maple cultivar as a Bonsai, well this is the little book for you. I live in Florida and for years I have been trying to keep Japanese Maples alive with no good luck as the temperature here is hot in the summer. The current Maple tree I have, it's been with me for the last 2 years, and had not fair to good. Now I have to tell you that after reading this book, and put to practice what I learned; my tree is finally thriving. The information is great and there is a great deal of drawings and photos to guide you throughout the hall process.I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I have.
