I have had a number of cats and most of them have died from kidney failure. We always fed them "quality" food from the vet (dry) but over the years, I've become suspicious that the dry food, even premium brands, and even prescription brands, may not be what cats need or even what keeps a cat in good health. My current cat is a rescue cat, with a number of health issues that he was born with. He has eaten low calorie prescription food for years--he's "bulemic"--will eat his weight in food and get really fat if he isn't controlled. He seems always hungry. ALL dry foods now irritate his stomach. So I got a copy of this book and read it thoroughly. Here's what I found:1. Dry food may not be idea for cats, according to this and other authors. Dry food may lead to over-eating, and wet food may satisfy with a smaller amount.2. There are good brands that have high protein and low carb (what cats need) and good supplements and this author has a table of foods that she considers decent brands, with a few notes where some of the varieties may not be optimal.3. There are recipes for homemade cooked or raw food.4. A cat with IBS (irritable bowel) may not be able to be on raw food at first.5. Supplements are needed if you make your own food; taurine is critical to cat food as are certain oils, and the author lists good supplements and how to prepare and store your own foods.6. Is your cat obese, overweight or just right? A healthy cat may of a slimmer profile than you might imagine is good--there are silhouettes that help you tell if you cat is healthy or not.7. Even the prescription foods (hairball, kidney, urinary) may not be healthful. Some pet foods have non-food-quality meats including tumors.
