This book was required for a surveying class. It goes over basic techniques without any derivations. The material is dated, but still valid. Doesn't have anything about modern surveying equipment and techniques (GPS, total stations,...etc). Still if you need the basics it's ok.
If you are looking for reference materials to take the California Engineering Surveying Exam as part of the Civil Engineer's PE exam, this is not the book you want. It doesn't cover the general concepts that an engineer is looking for. Seems to directed more at a person working on a surveying crew instead.
A useful text for beginning surveying students. It does not, unfortunately cover modern equipment or methods.
I used this book for my California state specific PE exam and I passed.I was searching for a good book on for seismic exam, but none of the available books had good user reviews. I was pretty confused and I did not want to spend lot of money on a book. I had little background in surveying only from my undergrads. This book is very basic, bad it will give you good introduction to all terminologies used in surveying. If you are good at geometry and maths, this should be good enough for you to pass the exam. This book had plenty of illustrative problems with figures, the kind that you usually get in the exam, and it helped me to get acquainted to those kind of problems. I believe surveying problems are nothing more than maths and geometry apart from technical terms that you need to learn from this book.
I like the book; but then I like all Schaum books. It covers elementary plane surveying methods with numerous example problems and illustrations. Subjects include closed traverses, slope staking, earthwork, construction staking, horizontal and vertical curves and topographic mapping. Some advanced subjects may not be covered such as aerial photography or GPS methods/theory.
I needed a good clear text on surveying using the old methods (no GPS or range finding equipment required). This one not only covers the math, but also the many techniques for using the equipment in the field. I hope it stays in print a long time so that the knowledge therein will not be lost.
This book is very informative for the in depth surveyor. It contains the formulas to accurately measure out any plot of land. Need to be great in your math in order to derive the most out of this book.
Book is much too difficult to understand. Need to tell folks that this won't help you if you don't already know a great deal about surveying
