I teach a surveying class at our local college. This edition is no better than the last one as it is full of mistakes. It contains mistakes that were in the 12th edition plus some new ones. If you have a choice, do not bother with this book.Update: as the term goes on, I and the students find more and more mistakes. For the price of this book it should have been edited better. I would not recommend this book whatsoever.
There are more errors in this book than there are pages(maybe not literally but pretty freakin close). Explanations and definitions are poor at best. It's not that the material is that complex, it's just that this author does a crap job of putting it all in layman's terms. For example, "Magnetic declination is the horizontal angle observed from the geodetic meridian to the magnetic meridian." It could have just as well been said that magnetic declination is the difference between true north and magnetic north(direction compass points).Diagrams are essentially useless. They usually accompany simple topics, whereas there will be nothing for more challenging topics. Also, only about 1 out of every 6 (partial)answers are given in the back of the book. It is just incredible. I cannot even check my work to see if I am doing the problem correctly.I am truly frustrated with this textbook, and I highly recommend saving your money(unless of course, like me, you are forced to use it for a class). ANYTHING would be better than this, including just referencing the internet.
This book does not provide adequate examples or a clear explanation of how to perform certain calculations. When it comes to the problems (which are assigned in my class), I found it very hard to solve them. I often felt lost and confused by what they were asking. Combining this book and my lecturer's (who is a graduate student) powerpoints is not even enough to clarify what we are expected to know. I advise against getting this book if you can.
This is the worst textbook i have ever used. The explanations are poor if any are given and the examples are useless. Wouldve gotten a much better grade in the class had my profesor decided to use a different book. You can download it online if you need it for hw problems. From a starving student please use your 150 bucks more wisely on a different textbook.
This book is absolutely horrible when it comes to explanations and working problems. There is a lot of math involved in all of the different calculations and all this book does is provide examples in block text form, without making the proper explanation to the outcome. Sometime you will get an image to back up the text, but it doesn't show how the process goes, just the field notes. There are practice problems at the end of the chapter, but most are slightly different than the one example you'll get, and others still require the use of trigonometry, most of which is not taught in this book. To top it off, there is an answer key (again, showing no work), but it only covers some of the problems, not all of them.As for the field notes, the book also doesn't explain how the field notes are organized or how they should be written and why. There are not very good explanations and descriptions of the surveying crew and a lot of the terms for roles and processes used in the field. This book might make perfect sense to someone with experience in surveying and knowledge in trigonometry, but to a beginner, it is just one step better than having nothing at all. Hopefully, you have a good teacher to go with this.
This book is an excellent overview of surveying/geomatics . To understand surveying, and incidentally this book, you MUST have an understanding of basic math i.e. algebra and trigonometry. The book covers all the basics of surveying; like the title says this book is elementary so don't expect to see calculus or linear algebra that is required for understanding advanced surveying. There are some errors in this book but that is to be expected. The book covers leveling, traversing, basic coordinate geometry, circular and parabolic curves, spirals, area and volume computations, very basic geodesy and photogrammetry, GPS, and GIS. If you want a bit more advanced surveying book try "Engineering Surveying" by Scholfield and Breach or "Surveying: Theory and Practice" by Anderson and Mikhail; this last book splits up most chapters into basic and advanced sections.
One word describes this book; awful. This book was a waste of money. It does a terrible job in explaining topics, is very wordy, has very few examples and the ones it has, at not helpful in any way. The answers given at the back are very few and contain a lot of errors. Overall, this is garbage. Do not buy this book.
this book is completely useless for learning anything, the answers in the back arent always correct, the examples are awful, it doesnt explain anything well, if your college uses this book; stay away from it because if the professor uses this, he's probably a garbage teacher too
