Mixed-Media Dollhouses: Techniques And Ideas For Doll-size Assemblages

This book takes the artistic approach of assemblage and collage, and combines it with the long-loved tradition of making doll houses--but these doll houses are anything but traditional! Begun as an artistic challenge between a group of talented friends, these mixed-media doll houses include beautiful castles, undersea fantasy-lands, gothic attics, inspiring tree houses and much more. Authors Tally Oliveau and Julie Molina share a host of interesting alteration techniques while showing readers how to construct beautiful, fantasy doll houses. Readers learn to how to construct or repurpose found boxes into rooms and houses, how to decorate interior surfaces, how to build miniature furnishings, how to make their own paper dolls, and how to embellish their houses using a variety of imaginative materials.

I am a grownup doll collector and hobbyist. I have been making dollhouses since I was a child. I had a Barbie Dream house as a kid but my friends and I made MANY "additions" and at one point we had an entire mini-town for our Barbies and toy horses. This book is for anyone who loves the idea of using what you have to make something beautiful. It shows you how to take boxes, scraps of paper, fabric, lace, glue and paint and turn it into your own artistic creation. My guess is that a lot of people who like this book have probably made creations (me included) like this at some point. Some of the examples are elegant and beautiful, others are dark and a little spooky and many are humorous. The book has many great photos and directions and a few templates for making your own multi-media dollhouse. I like the fact that the book has an underlying "reuse and recycle" message. Many of the items used are things that might have otherwise been thrown away. These dollhouses also are easy and inexpensive to make. This style of dollhouse making is like making a collage, only instead of putting the art on paper, you are making it into a 3-D dollhouse. The examples use paper, photos, fabric, lace and various odds and ends to make striking and unique dollhouses.I can see this book being fun for both kids and adults. Kids will love expanding their doll-towns using these easy techniques and original ideas. Grownups will appreciate the beauty and creativity. Times are tough right now and people are looking for inexpensive, fun hobbies that are easy. This book is a WIN on all levels! This isn't a book for someone who wants to build a fussy, old fashioned wooden Victorian dollhouse.
