I knew that I was ordering a small sized book that was exactly what I wanted to color and give away to people I live with in the nursing home to enjoy in their offices or give to the joy of 5 year olds. I've done them with pencils and gel pens...I've even mixed the two mediums on some pages. It's great fun to see the enjoyment of something I've created.Here's what I've discovered:One rule on every page of every stained glass coloring book: Always put a blank piece of pager behind the one you are working on or my eyes crossed...remember, the areas you are working on are SEE THROUGH! Be nice to yourself and your eyes. Working this way also helps you see where you missed spots that you want to go over...all yellows especially!Colored pencils (I use Arlana's Vivid Colors because they are the smoothest without any scratchy bits inbeded) work well if I were going to use them as package decorations or looking at them close up. On a window, they just don't pop the way I want. I realize many stained glass works are pale. Though I must say, parents of the 5 year olds who received them, just love them! I must admit, I really more enjoy bright intense colors! That's me. You might favor the softer more...it's all a matter of personal preference.Gel pens (I use Gel Pens 60 Pack with Case...the ones incased in a case almost as long as I'm tall...under 5") because I like the glittery ones' effects on things like stars, all the different parts of the unicorn, water, sand...you know things that glisten naturally. The gel pens sometimes flow well which means I don't have to keep going over and over them to show up as much as I want. If you look at the cover of the book, you can see what I mean...
You Need To Know What You Are Getting To Be Happy:These MINI Dover Little Activity Books are perfect for quick and easy (no tiny details) coloring for all ages. The smaller 4x6, Dover coloring books all have the little rainbow marking in the upper left hand corner. Now you know the size.. What is "stained glass?" It means that the pages are all printed on a transparent paper (vellum) that after colored on both sides can appear like stained glass when they are hung in a window and the light shines through. You might be able to see some of the previous picture black shadings on some of my photos. That's how thin the paper is. This book contains 8 unicorns to color and some minimal background. My pictures show all of the 8 unicorn pictures you get. These stained glass coloring books recommend coloring both sides of the page for the best stained glass window effects, so you could say these pages times two. The inside cover also mentions coloring the opposite side of the page in different colors for a different window effect.Supplies:The pictures are large enough that they don't require anything special to color in them. Sharpies, Crayons, Felt Tip Markers etc. work fine. If you are using markers I would put something behind your page just to be safe if you are striving for perfection for a gift. It might not even be an issue, but I am just playing it safe since usually the inside cover tells you to cut the pages out of these stained glass books first before you color them. They are NOT Perforated. Colored pencils might be more washed out compared to other coloring utensils to enjoy the "stained glass" effects. I've stuck with markers on these stained glass books or copied them to card stock.
