Not sure when this code revision will be adopted in my jurisdiction, but it's nice to have it in our hands top see what's coming down the pike. I prefer the handbook version of the code as it goes into more depth citing examples and providing many pictures and illustrations. The pictures really help explain the code and I've used previous versions on many occasions to settle disputes with sibs as well as inspectors. I feel the handbook version is well worth the additional cost.
If you want to actually understand the NEC, you can either take a bunch of classes or read the handbook. Classes, when taught by professional electricians are probably the best choice, but this handbook is a good alternative.
The 12th updated edition of the NEC Handbook packs in technical details on the national electrical code and offers the complete 2011 NEC under one cover. Keys to understanding the code and applying it correctly offer diagrams, links to on-demand webinars and live action video, access to the complete UL White Book cross-referenced in key NEC articles, discussions of the past, present and future of the Code and how it affects projects, and more. Any serious contractor regularly working with the NEC simply MUST own this invaluable desk reference!
I'd suggest just buying the handbook. Apply the money you'd spend on a plain NEC and get this book with the deeper explanations that end up saving a lot of time. The pictures are worth a thousand words, and probably two thousand words in NEC codeese.Wait a beat, and be safe out there!
The NEC Handbook contains the actual NEC code and examples for solving problems, which is very useful as a PE Exam reference.
Ever wonder what gage and type of wire you need for a 20A current draw on a motor? Or how many 16 gage wires you can fit into a 4 x 6 junction box? Or what breaker size you need for an electrical panel? Or?... [insert hundreds of other electrical questions]. If so, this book is probably for you.Having worked with a LOT of standards, I have say the NEC code book has got it's act together. This is the defacto standard for anyone who needs to work with electricity or design electrical appliances. The best part of this standard is that it clearly states the code rule and the goes on to give rationale and examples. As an engineer that works on a variety of electro-mechanical equipment, the in-depth explanations presented in this standard are really appreciated. In my opinion, a good working knowledge of this standard is a must for most engineers and tradesmen who work around electricity. Most devices have their own standards but the NEC is simply referenced everywhere and some local jurisdictions lean heavily on it so it's always good to be familiar with it.It's always important to keep the most up to date version of the standard and for this reason I recommend this version. Also note that most National Standards are quite expensive and for the reasonable cost, you can't afford not to use the most up to date version of this standard.
A searchable resource. All of the code changes are highlighted for easy identification. One drawback. All of the charts and tables are graphic images not text, and not always easy to read. If the charts were not graphics it would definitely get a higher rating. The charts and tables do not display well on the Windows Store App because they are graphic images. It is some better on the iPad and Android tablets. Some of the text does not render well on the higher resolution screens.
I'm only giving it 4 stars not because of it's immense usefulness to trained electricians, but because the page stock is fairly weak and does not take rapid page flipping very well. Aside from that, this book is a must have for all electricians. With numerous, easy to find updates and deletions and insightful commentary this is /the/ book to have for all electricians.
