This is a great book. It's not original/new recipes but compilations of the best of the best local Hawaii cookbooks up to the date of population. I own a cramp load of local Hawaiian cookbooks, and this is the one of the two (the other one is 50th Anneiversary Best of Our Favorite Recipes 1946 -1996 by Maui Association for Family and Community Education )I grab for when I want to make a local dish. I have also bought and mailed copies to my friends on the mainland, who have left Hawaii.Anther local cook book I just picked up you want to try once starts carrying it, is Jean Hee's Best of the Best Hawaii Recipes by Jean Watanabe Hee. Hee is one of the top local Hawaii recipe book writers. You might want to check out her other books that dose carry.
I absolutely love Hawaii and the food. After purchasing the book, my wife and I have been able to replicate many of the recipes in the book and feel like we've made the long escape back to the islands. Unfortunately, several of the recipes call for ingredients we can't get here in middle America; but, that is not the books fault, nor should it be a reason not to purchase the book. Oh, by the way, several of the shrimp recipes are absolutely incredible!
We lived in the islands for 4 years and just loved the food at all the pot luck affairs while we were there. This book reminds us of those times and has many many great choices that really do taste like they do in Hawaii. Great investment. BUY!
This is a wonderful cookbook. I was born in Hawaii in 1950. I have traveled the world but there really isn't any place as beautiful as Hawaii, and that includes the dishes. Best of the Best from Hawaii is a great way to prepare those dishes. I give it 5 stars.
I'm from Alaska, and I love my Best of the Best Alaska cookbook. After two visits to Maui, I thought it would be fun to get the Hawaii cookbook. It's got a great selection of recipes and interesting facts and tidbits about the 50th state. It also includes information about luaus and a luau menu. It's a fun souvenir, and both the haupia and huli huli chicken I made from this book were super tasty.
The book is well made and attractive. The recipe's are easy to make and look like authentic Hawaiian home recipe's.. Unfortunately most of them have not produced great food and have required modification. Think of this cookbook like a church cookbook of people's favorite recipe's rather than something produced by professional chef's.
I am so happy with this book. Brings up lots of memories of wonderful food growing up in Hawaii. I have made several receipes from the book and have many more book marked to make.
