...when I started reading this I felt vindicated! Many of the things that C.L. talks about are unique to the Cape and Eastern Massachusetts gardening, (i.e. late Springs, high ocean winds, temporate zones, sandy soil, etc) and the book discusses how to deal with them. She writes very practically about these issues in a nice Q&A format.
Information is good but NO pictures or sketches. This kind of book really needs pic's especially so the reader can identify the differences in plant characteristics. Without pic's, I have to constantly refer to the internet - extra step.
I gave this book to my mother as a birthday present after she retired and moved to Cape Cod. She is an experienced gardener, and found it very helpful in her quest to adjust her hobby to the particular challenges created by the weather and soil conditions. As an upstart gardener, I too found it a useful read. One drawback (4-stars), is that there are not many pictures, and the ones they have are not particularly impressive looking. Overall I find this book very helpful, and would recommend it to other seaside gardeners.
I bought this for a friend who lives on the Cape. It is a great book for that specific location. There is good information on evasive species in the area and how to combat specific weeds found there, as well as what plants will be most successful in cape conditions. For more detailed plant information... or quick reference I would have other books on hand, though this is an important book to use in planing your cape cod garden!
This is a very user friendly book. Good for quick reference and for the beginner.
