This has some good looking recipes, however the first three recipes call for Amish Starter. The third recipe states the the recipe for Amish Starter is available, and yet the recipe is not included not is there a link to the starter, if it located elsewhere. An error/omission this big should have been caught and corrected before the book was offered.
No recipe for Amish starter which you need for first few recipes, duh big balldrop on that, also family meat dinner is written 2 times but neither recipe adds the beef into it . Lol which leaves about 20 recipe you can use
I grew up in Amish country & I've never even heard of most of these recipes. A quick peruse by an Amish friend confirmed that she'd never heard of these either. If this is "authentic" then it must be from a very small sect.
The amish know how to cook! who knew?! Wow is all I have to say. So many tradition dishes that are basically forgotten by normal society. We truly are missing out! Made one dish for my wife she was so perplexed at the tastes she was completely unfamiliar with. We made a dish every night this week!
My husband and I drive to Pennsylvania Dutch country every summer for the food. My friend told me about this book so I bought it. I love the recipes in this book, the Amish are great cooks. I particularly love the hot dutch potato salad.
Well, I have to admit I'm surprised. This isn't a cookbook -- it is a collection of recipes. No stories accompany the recipes to give them context whatsoever! There's no embellishment, no personal perspective.That said, the recipes themselves are well written and include information about calories, nutrition, etc. I could have gotten them from any old web page or blog, however, so that's all that keeps this from being a one star review instead of a two star.
Interesting cookbook learned about a culture that I didn't really know about through cooking the meals from this cookbook. I would recommend getting this book if you want to learn more about a culture.
Having Amish relatives this book has a lot of great real Amish recipes.
