This illustrated companion to the classic Gleason & Cronquist is a "must-have" for anyone who needs clear, concise line drawings to help understand fine distinctions between species. Although expensive, it's a terrific reference that will become a classic. You will use it often and you won't regret spending the money. Caution: it's a big volume and very heavy; don't plan on carrying it along in the field.
You can't go wrong with this illustrated manual. The Gleason and Cronquist manual is one of the standards out there and this companion manual is extremely useful and well done. If i had to criticize, it's that the illustrations don't include each plant at different stages of it's annual cycle for some species such as forbs (e.g. seedling, vs. flowering stage, etc.). However, that would probably require 2 or 3 volumes, and this is a legitimate criticism of just about every plant i.d. illustrated guide or manual that's out there. If you're a biologist or plant person interested in the flora of the eastern two thirds of the u.s., this is a good investment despite the cost.
If you work in a botanical related field you should have "THE BIBLE"...this book worth to be called THE BOTANIST BIBLE...if you don't agree, all you have to do, is order IT!
Indispensible resource especially as a companion to Gleason and Cronquist's Manual of Vascular Plants. These two books and a good dissecting microscope are what I've been using to identify some tricky plants.
