Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp, garden columnist for the Indianapolis Star on Sundays and Tom Tyler, past Extension Educator and horticulturist for the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service in Indianapolis collaborated to pick more than 175 ornamental plants that do well in the Hoosier landscape. Detailed information on each plant including the "when, where and how" to plant is included. Although not every plant that does well in Indiana is listed, this book provides a great starting point. A must for long-time Hoosier residents and new arrivals as well!
I have bought two of this particular book and recommended it to several people who live near by so that we can enjoy knowing that our gardens help instead of hurt the local flora and fauna. I have a vast collection of books on this subject and I find this one is about 90% of what one would need. Also, INPAWS is the connection for the NW IN area to make certain you are doing the right thing for our world regarding plantings. One thing I found particularly important is data on how attractive the plants are to deer as there is an over population of them in our area. Please be aware of plants that can grow here as opposed to plants that should be grown here. Five stars!
I think this book is very well written and would be a very helpful reference library addition for gardeners' of all levels. It is written clearly and concisely. The pictures actually look like what they are describing. The book deals with those perennials that grow in our state but are also useful for any gardeners in the same growing zones. I have also heard Ms. Meyers-Sharp speak and her talks are just like her written word.
This is one of my favorite books to read as a beginner gardener, trying to learn about planting and caring for a flower garden. I received the book very quickly. The condition of the book is like new. The book is good reading material for a beginner gardener like myself. There are a lot of color photos in the book, which are very helpful to a to me, as a beginner, in learning what flowers, shrubs, trees, and other plants, look like, and how to plant and care for them.
