The book is exactly what the title states - it's a snapshot of the various farms in Cape Cod. Gorgeous photography of the farms, famers, crops, flowers, animals, and even pets, are the focal point of the book. The text outlines the history of the farm & the farmer, what crops are grown, where you can buy the crops, if they have CSAs or not, and hints and tricks from the farmers for your own garden.I hope it was help to you as it was to me
Originally from Massachusetts, when I think of “The Cape,” I think of beaches, fabulous seafood and “Old Cape Cod” sung by Patti Page. And, hey, I knew they had cranberry bogs, and I’ve seen the bags of Cape Cod Potato Chips in the supermarket.Farms of Cape Cod introduced me to a side of the Cape that I didn't know existed. Ms. Foster is a professional photographer; therefore the photography in Farms of Cape Cod is stunning, one beautiful photo after another. The narratives in the book are brief, but she was able to capture the personality of the farms and the people who work on them. Her love of Cape Cod, its people and its produce is obvious throughout the book. This is definitely not a “coffee-table” book. The photography, in and of itself, would make it a lovely gift for a relative or friend. I have sent one to my daughter. I would particularly recommend it to anyone interested in reading and learning about farming, the people who run the farms and agriculture in general.I also recommend it for homeschoolers. As a former homeschooler, I wish I’d had Farms of Cape Cod while we were schooling. It would be a wonderful addition to a homeschool curriculum.I’ve been through the book several times, and each time I come away with an urge to visit the Cape. I haven’t been "Up North" in a few years. The next time I go, I may spend a few days on the Cape looking for farms and farmer’s markets. I’ll be carrying Farms of Cape Cod as my resource and, of course, a bag of Cape Cod Chips.
I loved this book. The beauty of the photographs and the reverence for the subjects stirred my emotions. I am so thankful that these remarkable people are in our midst. The book spotlights the hard work that farmers do to preserve a better way of life for all of us on the Cape.
This is a highly informative and visually rich exploration of Cape Cod's many farms. It should be of great interest to anyone who is interested in growing their own food, Cape Cod, and gardening. Foster is a master gardener and shares valuable insight into growing on the Cape. The photos are stunning.
Beautifully photographed vignettes of Cape Cod's small farms. Stephanie Foster paints intimate portraits of the people who persevere to grow vegetables and raise farm animals in a regional mostly thought of as a tourist mecca. Cape Cod is rich is in history and farming was a tradition centuries ago. The "buy local" movement and small farming has rejuvenated an interest in small farms and this book is a very timely chronicle in a sense, of small farmers returning to Cape Cod. Foster's status as a flower grower and master gardener herself allows her to write with authority, but more importantly her creative writing style is colorful, personal, a quick but satisfying read between the stunning visuals (she makes a farmstand sans people a work of art). The reader gets a glimpse of a lifestyle and personalities. We want to know these folks as well as seek out their farms and buy their produce! Truly loved this book.
