The Autism Trail Guide: Postcards From The Road Less Traveled

Ellen Notbohm's child-centered approach to autism has had immeasurable effect on the autism community through her books Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew, 1001 Great Ideas for Teaching and Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Ten Things Your Student with Autism Wishes You Knew. A cohesive compilation of her best articles, The Autism Trail Guide: Postcards from the Road Less Traveled will help parents of children with autism take on everyday challenges while celebrating what their children bring to their world. Ellen offers advice on concrete issues such as math homework, video games, and tricky behavior, and also tackles the more abstract concepts of parenting: trusting parental instincts, when to take risks, how to hang on, and when to let go. Finalist in the 2007 ForeWord Book of the Year Awards and finalist in the 2008 Eric Hoffer Awards, this book is absolutely invaluable to all who are "on the autism trail."

This book is a fantastic companion to Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew (by the same author). So easy to read, you can feel the empathy of the author as you read it. Easy to apply to own situation. I give it a 10 out of 10.

I chose this rating because of the human side of autism as depicted by the author...also the mother of a child with autism as well as a child with ADHD. Ms. Notbohm explained the living with such a loving child and looked at it from the child's inner side/feelings. Her attifude, as mother gave me a better understanding...an understanding that can be utilized with all children and adults with, not so usual, life challenges. It's a heartwarming side of autism...adhd and other challenges that children and adults have... and equally important .... the significance and feelings of the parent(s) and their love, stresses, as well as sharing tools for survival with other parents. My six-year-old grandson was diagnosed with autism in September 2006. Since that time, I have devoured dozens of books and hundreds of articles on autism. Just when I was sure I couldn't read anything new, I picked up The Autism Trail Guide. I can honestly say that it has helped me more than any book I've read. Ellen Notbohm's writing is inspiring, and she gives me strength and hope every day to help Jake.
