This book makes an attempt to distill the "essence" of patterns down to the simplest examples possible. Sadly, in doing so, it strips out much of the power of practical examples. Despite having over 200 pages, the book is amazingly devoid of useful content. Most of the volume of the book consists of program listings, and the source code is so ridiculously boilerplate that only about 10% of the lines are important. The listings could have been omitted entirely and not much would have changed. Implementations of interfaces frequently consist of a single line of "actual" code which might do something as rudimentary as print to the console, e.g. Console.Writeline("Building car windows now..."). And while one could argue that this helps focus on the organization, I would MUCH rather have seen real practical examples with implementation details simply omitted. At least realistic examples missing implementation details would better convey the practical application of the patterns. By contrast, these toy examples compile, but they don't offer a hint of everyday applicability.Worse, there is little to no commentary explaining why each pattern is useful, its pros and cons, what other contexts is might be employed, etc. Readers are frequently left with only the silly car analogy and no practical idea of how the pattern might appear in their own code.So, honestly, I'm not sure who would benefit from this book. If you're an old-hat at design patterns, then this book really won't offer any new insights, and even the C# syntax presented here is extremely rudimentary.
