This is a great book It shows very well how the Rock Island went into a downward spiral that eventually led to its demise through the photos of the equipment and how decrepit it became. The beautiful diesels and passenger cars show the results of "deferred" maintenance and how the depots today are often sitting with no tracks in sight to even remind us that the CRI&P was ever there. This road had luxurious streamliners at one time. In the end, it had two trains mostly within Illinois, and commuter lines. The photos are unique and tell it all..
Just what fans of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific will love. Great black & white, and color photos of the Rock providing passenger service, the various steam and diesel locomotives, and passenger rolling stock. A MUST HAVE!
Good book, with nice pictures. Don't be fooled, it is not a complete history. It does cover passenger trains reasonably well. For instance, the Golden Rocket in partnership with Southern Pacific was stillborn. The cars were divided and ran on their parent railroads without the red and stainless paint scheme as part of whatever consist they made up, but not as the CRIP-SP Golden Rocket. There are a number of good, clear pictures and I feel it to be well worth the price. The foreword/ history by the author was especially appropriate.
This is a really good book for your Rock Island library. The book has really good pictures of stations and trains. I model the Rock Island in the earlier years, but if you like the Rock in its final years then you will enjoy this book. Great value.
