Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Handbook, 3rd Edition (Motorbooks Workshop)

For Harley-Davidson aficionados, the very name Sportster conjures an image of a fire-breathing mechanical beast scorching the world’s tarmacan image the Sportster itself often does not live up to. Straight from the factory, in its standard form, the Sportster routinely proves an entry-level motorcycle providing a relatively tame ride. This book aims to change all that and to show every Sportster rider how to free the beast in his or her bike. With expert, detailed advice on the proper mechanical massaging and plenty of helpful diagrams and photos this updated, third edition of Buzz Buzzelli's best-selling handbook shows how the Sportster can be transformed into the superbike of old. Including a history of the Sportster from its birth in 1957 to the recent introduction of a new engine (only the third in its long life), this book has everything it takes to open up the gates of hell and give the Sportster its head.

This easy-to-read handbook discusses all aspects of Sportster performance, from engine to suspension modifications. It provides suitable modifications at every price point, from dirt cheap to very expensive. I used it to customize my 1999 883 and am delighted with the results. It also provides valuable lessons for anyone interested in modifying any motorcycle. I would recommend this book to anyone planning to customize their ride.

Great book to get your mind on sensible tuning your Sportster. The book describes all possible good and not so good ways to tune the engine, but is mainly focussed on tuning the 883 and converting an 883 to an 1200.If you allready own a 1200 you might be looking for information which is not available in this book.Still a valuable piece in your library.

This was my bible for one of my bikes, a 1990 sportster 883-1200 conversion. It covers a lot of the history of the sportster & theory on what can be done to hop it up & keep it rideable. Even if you aren't going to do anything yourself you should probably read this book so you'll know what to have done. It's a nice read too.

Buzz backs up his performance recommendations with solid test data and easy to understand engineering explanations. I followed his guidance and got the performance figures he said I would. It's an educational and entertaining book that I read over and over.

Buzzelli's masterpiece on H-D Sporster performance. Not simply his opinions, but recommendations are backed up by tried and true testing. If you're a Sportster owner--get this book!

Pass on the hype.....this book is a soft general overview. However it lacks on technical details. It focuses mainly in two areas, 883 coversion and history. Again the 883 conversion IS NOT TECHNICALLY DEEP and I would even venture to say lacking. I was disapointed in this book. Not recommended.

Though this book discussed and touches on many different performance modifications it lacks ANY true technical information and is merely a good read for those interested in history and development more so than how to get true performance gains. Most of the technical information is severely outdated (late 80's and early 90's) and supports methodology which has been proven as a performance LOSS in this day and age (such as mirror finish port polishing!)Is a nostalgic rag to be read but not a guide to go by...

This book has been superceded by a newer version, however if you own a 2003 or earlier all of the info is relavent. It even has info for Ironhead builders/riders. The book is well written and logically laid out. It has enough technical information to keep the gearheads happy but it's written in plain english that even the average wrench can understand. Bottom line, if you are considering hot rodding your sporty but aren't sure where to start or what's the best combination for you then this book will pay for itself by avoiding buying parts you don't need or that you can't use.
