I have rarely seen a book so poorly written and marred by factual errors as "EPUB From the Ground Up."Let the book speak for itself. In the first chapter, the author writes:"In this chapter, you will learn about the EPUB version 2 standard, referred to as EPUB 2.... Some standards are mainly for the black-and-white e-readers, while others are for the color e-readers. For example, some standards are compliant for the color e-readers, which allows for the use of video, text, and audio. Other e-readers may only allow for text. EPUB 2 is mainly for the black-and-white e-readers, but can be viewed on color devices as well."The idea that there are some "standards" for black-and-white e-readers and others for color is never explained, as the only "standard" mentioned so far is EPUB 2, which has no such limitations: there are literally thousands of e-books conforming to the EPUB 2 standard that contain color material, and black-and-white e-readers display them just as well as a black-and-white printer renders a page with color elements. Further, the phrase "some standards are compliant" is nonsensical: it is documents or devices that are compliant--that is, they comply with a standard--not the other way around. This example is typical of the author's careless articulation of technical concepts, which leads one to question whether he really understands the material.Organization is a weak point as well. In chapter 1, "EPUB Defined", the section "What Is an EPUB?" doesn't occur until page 17. Prior to that, the author runs through dozens of abbreviations and technical terms, calling some unimportant and promising to return to others later, giving no sense of their relative importance.
