I was looking for ideas to redo the landscape in my front yard and this book was not what I expected. The book is full of pictures and the plants in them are identified, but not the Sunset zones they will grow in. Each picture illustrates a basic landscaping design principle that might be helpful to a new gardener. There is one page devoted to smart choices in each of the following topics: shrubs, perennials, seasonal accents, ground covers, succulents and cactus, and container plants. However, there is no mention of the plant's water requirements and some of the suggestions require regular water. The description also does not include the plant's preference for sun/shade, acid/alkaline soil, sandy/clay soil, or the Sunset zone they grow in. So you will have to do a lot of homework in order to be able to use their suggestions. Overall, I was disappointed and sorry that I bought the book.
I was very disappointed, the book was not what I expected...not a guide anyway. 80% (or more) of the book had pictures of landscape and container designs with narratives, and a list of plants used in the design. Nothing said about the plants themselves on watering needs, size of plant, sunlight requirements or feeding and at the end of the book were a few pages of basic tips.
I am a huge fan of the Sunset Western Garden book. I wanted a low water garden reference book. This book is interesting with pictures of different yards, patios. What it lacks is letting you know the zone, light requirements, etc, so you have to know if the city the garden shown is similar to your zone, it's helpful. Otherwise, you have to look all the plants up. Better to get from the library than purchase.
Great resource book, it is one of many I purchased. I am a Landscape Architect (old school) and prefer books to online searches. This is packed with a great selection of plants and successful planting combinations
hello, we have been readers of sunset for years. we have the original garden book, the updated version, and now this fabulous easy care garden book. there are great ideas for low water usage plants and as always, great photos. we have followed some of the ideas in our own yard. but, you will have to go to your own nursery to look at what is available in your area. great book, ideas, and fast delivery
Was hoping for a book like Sunset Western Garden Book specifically for drought tolerant plants. Was more just pictures of groupings of plants that look good together which is OK but I was disappointed.
This is a nice pictorial supplement for the Western Garden Book. It shows a lot of ideas that have been used in homes throughout the western part of the country. You will want the main Sunset Western Garden book for detailed analysis of plants.
Excellent book especially for people in California and the Southwest who are modifying their gardens to deal with the epic drought.
