Originally I purchased a Haynes repair manual since no other was available at the time. It is inexpensive, but the information is very limited. The manual you see here from Bentley Publisher's is far more thorough and attractive. This thick, 648 page hardcover manual specifically covers the 2004-2008 Prius (US second generation) whereas the other manual has half as many pages and covers both versions from 2001 through 2008, meaning that more generic information is being crammed into fewer pages. If all you ever intend to do is change your oil and air filter, the Haynes manual is likely a good value. On the other hand, this Bentley manual is a better choice for owner's of the newer Prius offering a better layout with far more complete explanations and images. The wiring diagrams alone are worth the purchase of this Bentley repair manual. This is a case where you truly get what you pay for.
Although I have only read, not actually had to use, this manual to fix a prius, it is very thoughtfully put together.There is a significant amount of hybrid technical training information which helps the owner or independent tech understand how the Prius hybrid system works, and helps identify the work that can be reasonably expected to be done outside a dealership.The first few sections (with theory and safety) are in full color. The 5th star is because it is a really nice product. The hardcover may not be necessary, but it is nice.The more technical chapters, include a high level of detail for the work covered. I noticed a comment on the haynes book asks for ignition coil torque information (which the other review says is not in the haynes book, I haven't checked). This book does have torque specs for the ignition coils, which are probably the information that the other reviewer is talking about.My only complaint so far is that when I was looking up repair information there seems to be a significant amount of white space at the bottom of pages where there wasn't enough room to fit the next graphic. The graphics are big, which is nice, but at first I didn't turn the page and notice that the section I was reading actually continued on to the next page.Look forward to using it. Looks perfect for me -- the person who wants to understand everything, and do some basic stuff outside a dealership.
If you want to know how to replace your brake pads, this is the book for you. I bought it hoping to learn how to replace a CV joint and wheel bearing. The following constitutes all the information in the book regarding CV joint replacement: "Replace drive axle if rubber boots are damaged or leaking." There is nothing at all about wheel bearings. Yet there are 20 pages of information about brakes. The index is horrible. Yes, there are 600+ pages in this book but most of it is white spaces with little information on each page. There is a pretty good full color overview about how the hybrid system and how it works. I learned one thing from this experience: ALWAYS READ THE ONE-STAR REVIEWS FIRST!
This book is a great resource for any Prius owner to prevent getting screwed at the dealer or repair shop. It is indespensible for any owner who wants to make some modifications like the EV Mode button or adding the Plug In capability from Cal Cars open source. The diagrams and photos are great and include descriptions of the function of specific parts. On the first day of getting this book in the mail, I had a greater understanding of the two electric motors in the transmission. A must own for any Prius owner.
I bought this book with high hopes. I have done quite a lot of repair work to cars for 35 years now. For my many used cars, I have relied on factory manuals (Honda and Saab),as well as Haynes and Chilton. Of course, the factory manuals are great, but even still, the others add something useful. No so with the Bentley book; it's almost comical. The little information that the book provides is spread out on the individual pages (as though they were aiming for volume not information), and then repeated in other places. I agree with another reviewer: there really is very little useful information beyond what's in the owner's manual. There is some information, but overall, I was very disappointed. For example, there is no guidance on replacing CV joints, or ball joints, or CV joint boots, or the fuel pump, or timing belt (is there one?). These jobs will need to be done eventually. There is some information in the book, and every little bit counts when you're doing a job--but compared to the number of pages, I found this book very disappointing. It looks and feels like it's written for someone who will place the book on their coffee table (to advertise their Priusness), but won't actually get under the car and work on it. I still have to buy a Haynes, and ten years from now, will buy the Toyota manual.
I jumped on this book when it first came out as there were no other Prius manuals out there at the time. In the years since then I have repeatedly tried to find useful information in it but there simply isn't much there. Lots of beautiful graphics, but a wiring diagram? No. Details on the algorithm used to decide when the gas engine runs? No. How to remove a dashboard panel? Nah.This is a sadly useless book. My best guess is they rushed it into print before the Prius community had sussed out the inner workings.
