How to Grow Apples in the Southern U.S. is the book you would expect it to be. It teaches you how to grow apples, and focuses primarily on how to do it in the Southern portion of the United States. The thing that makes this book so great is that it goes into enough detail so that even somebody who does not know anything about growing apples (myself) can understand and know how to get it right. It tells you what the ideal conditions are for planting each type of apple tree. How to Grow Apples in the Southern U.S. is a great book to buy if you need a hand in growing your own apples.
Very solid book covering the basics of growing apples in the Southern United States. As someone starting an orchard in the heat and humidity of East Texas, I found the book to be great for getting my trees up and growing quite well. The only problem I had with the book was its lack of information concerning irrigation of apple trees throughout the year and especially during August when we had no rain for nearly two months with the always ever plentiful abundance of hot, dry summer weather. It took a bit of trail and error on my part to realize that the winter/spring planted apple trees needed 3-4 gallons every 4-5 days while my peaches needed 3-4 gallons every 4 days and my plums needed 3-4 gallons every 3 days. With some info. on irrigation and a few more pictures of some of the multitudes of apples that can grow in the South, this book can really become something special. So, for those looking for some real quality fruit trees at great prices, the author owns his own tree farm (Legg Creek Farm in Texas) and has numerous types of fruit trees and sizes. Shipping is even free on orders over one hundred dollars. I've used Legg Creek Farm's website to order in the past and will continue to do so in the future as I haven't found many that compare to its quality, stock, and prices. This past winter/spring, I planted 100 of his apple trees and only had a failure rate of 2% which are guaranteed for one year. Not many other companies stand behind their products the way that Mr. Watson does. If I were to rate his company, it'd get the full five stars.
If you ever considered getting serious about gardening and taking it up to the next level, then this guide is a great starting place.I have no prior experience with growing trees by myself, though I do have some knowledge about growing flowers of all sorts, so I know the basicsof proper gardening, however growing healthy trees which yield tasteful fruits is a totally different story and there are many different aspects to considerwhich I wasn't even aware of.This book does a great job of preparing you to the task, helping you set the ground and guide you through the entire process.
Nice book for those wanting to grow apples in the South. The apple variety selections are good. Could use more info on why apples don't grow well in the South, like soil types, growth rates affected by soil fungi/bacteria? Importance of rootstock selection?
