Gardening In Windy Locations

Strong, persistent winds can be one of the biggest challenges facing gardeners in temperate regions. Both cool sea winds and hot onshore winds can make life very difficult for many plant species. Often gardeners don't fully appreciate how much the wind can affect plant growth until they move to an exposed coastal location or a new subdivision with few surrounding trees or shrubs for shelter. But despite the many challenges, it is possible to establish an attractive and productive garden in a windy situation if suitable species are chosen and appropriate steps are taken to provide some measure of wind protection. This concise booklet provides practical, down-to-earth advice on establishing and maintaining plants in windy situations and lists both ornamental and edible plants which are suited to exposed, windy gardens (approximately 5500 words).

I guess for the price I shouldn't have expected much, but this booklet is basic and that is about it. Most of the information I already knew.

For less than a buck, this is a great little read and well worth the money. It's comparable to gardening booklets like one of the Storey Country Wisdom Bulletins (e.g. Pest-Proofing Your Garden: Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletin A-15) that cost several dollars more.I garden on the upper floor of an apartment tower and wind is a huge issue. Yet gardening books -- and websites-- only cover the issue of wind in a paragraph or two. While Mr. Carr's book is by no means exhaustive, it will certainly give the reader a good understanding of how wind affects plants, how windbreaks work along with how to plant and/or construct one, some ideas on landscaping, and lists of both ornamental and edible plants that are especially suited to -- or at least tolerant of -- windy environments (along with those that aren't such a good idea). Most of the material will be familiar to experienced gardeners but there are a lot of good reminders in this little ebooklet as well. As with anything related to gardening, there will be items with which to quibble. For instance, he lumps basil in with other Mediterranean plants like thyme or rosemary that do well in windy condition, while I've found basil (at least varieties like Genovese) needs to be sheltered as much as parsley. But gardeners will never agree with each other 100% of the time. Ever.I'm very pleased with this purchase. After scouring the internet and my local library for information on gardening in windy environments, I have found this ebooklet to be worth every one of the 99 cents I paid for it and thank Mr. Carr for writing it.
