Jeff Heimbuch’s new book, Main Street Windows: A complete guide to Disney’s whimsical tributes, is a must have for Disney fans and Disney history enthusiasts. I’m amazed at the amount of time and effort that Heimbuch went through in order to put this entire project together. The book spans all five Magic Kingdom-style parks, including: Disneyland; Walt Disney World; Tokyo Disneyland; Disneyland Paris; and Hong Kong Disneyland.As everyone knows, Jeff is my partner on Communicore Weekly (the Greatest Online Show™) but I haven’t let that influence my review. Keeping my integrity and your trust as a reviewer is paramount. That being said, the book is going to quickly become an indispensable tool for researchers and theme park fans.If you've ever visited a Disney park, then you know that Imagineering spends a lot of time getting the details just right. As you traverse Main Street, you’ll notice that the windows on the upper levels of the businesses have names and illustrations. Most everyone knows that the names are tributes to the men and women who played a significant role in creating the parks, but they often question the businesses associated with the names.Heimbuch has tracked down the windows, including the fictional ones, and offers detailed biographical and historical information about each person. And yes, some of the windows are completely fictional and are there just for atmosphere. There have been other books on the topic (Chuck Snyder’s excellent Windows On Main Street comes to mind) but to the best of my knowledge, there is has never been a book remotely as comprehensive as this Main Street Windows.The layout makes perfect sense for this book and features one to two windows per page (sometimes more) on a double-page layout.
If you've ever visited a Disney "magic kingdom" park (those modeled after the original Disneyland), you've walked by dozens of windows bearing the names fictional businesses and their employees. What you might not realize is that these windows are tributes to the people who contributed to the parks in some way, such as design, construction, or operations. Having your name on a window on Main Street in a Disney park is one of the highest honors for Disney Cast Members, and is considered by some to be even more prestigious than being named a Disney Legend.Disney is famous for its attention to detail, particularly in their theme parks, and windows on Main Street are an great example. Cast Member names aren't simply slapped on any old window. The fictional names on Main Street windows almost always allude to either the job or interests of the person being honored. For instance, Roy E. Disney's (son of Roy O. Disney and Walt Disney's nephew) windows have a nautical theme, based on his passion for sailing. Some windows are based on inside jokes, such as Imagineer Rolly Crump's window, on which he's listed as "Assistant Palm Reader" because he used to bring people to fellow Imagineer John Hench to have their palms read.This book is a guide is all of the windows on the Main Streets of Disneyland, Magic Kingdom (Walt Disney World), Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Each park is given its own chapter, and the pages of each chapter are all the same color, which can help readers navigate between chapters more easily than using page numbers.
