I've saved this cookbook sample on my iPad for sometime and finally decided to purchase the cookbook. I'm sorry I bought the book and I will return it to . Why?While the recipes look delicious, and the recipes are favorites from Irish families, the recipes are incomplete or use the scale for weighing ingredients. As most American kitchens do not use a kitchen scale to weigh ingredients, this cookbook would not be easy to cook from.Also, some of the recipes are lacking the pan size or temperature needed to bake the recipe in question. A good example of this missing information is the recipe called Uncle Frank's Lemon Cake. The recipe does not give the temperature needed to bake the cake nor does the recipe give a pan size. Another recipe that suffers from this missing detail is the Queen Cakes.A good cookbook should have the needed pan sizes and temperatures needed to complete the recipe. It would also be helpful if the cookbook used cooking measurements found in the country the book is published in.Some of the recipes you will find in this cookbook include:Old-Fashioned Orange MarmaladePhil Young's Gran's Potato SoupAnn's Gently Cooked BeefsteakAn Economical Sheep's HeadOld-Fashioned Soda SconesMother's PuddingRecommend with caveats given.
I rate cookbooks based on how well the recipes work as written. If we set aside the fact that I'm American and therefore have no idea what a mug vs. a teacup is as a measurement, the instructions are not explicitly detailed. A beginner cook, with little confidence in the kitchen, would find this book frustrating. So far we've tried 3 recipes from this book, and all of them have been disappointing.
Good reading--have tried two recipes that turned out fine, but if I were a new cook, it would have been iffy because the instructions were vague.
This gift was well-received and I very much enjoyed a little browse through before wrapping it.Nothing as cozy and homey as a brush with the Irish!! Very enjoyable. It arrived well-packagedand promptly. A good experience all 'round!
This cookbook is for the beginner , some of the recipes are not even recipes they are so simple .Being from the internet I was expecting a bigger variety and more interesting recipes . I am surprised at the simplicity . I would suggest buying the Irish cooking bible . The recipes are well written with full page pictures on the opposite page .
It is very interesting and I look forward to trying some of the receipes. It is broken down into the areas of a meal so if your looking for dessert you can go to the dessert section of the book and find what you want.
