I received a free copy of this book to review. This book impressed me with clear instructions and interesting projects. The pop up projects use pages from the book itself, so it may not be suitable for a library collection but would be fun book for a parent or teacher to add to their craft book library.The first chapter provides information about materials and basic instructions. Information is provided about making book weights out of household objects, types of paper to use, and selecting tools. Specific information is provided about how to make the tools and projects accessible to children and how to teach them to use scissors. Additional information is provided about how artists and professional bookbinders use similar tools in their work.Chapters 2, 3 and 5 focus on making different kinds of books. Photographs of finished books are provided throughout. The photographs include examples made by real children. The books come in different shapes and styles encouraging creativity. The pop-up book options in Chapter 3 are attractive and approachable, they look like they would be fun to make and fun to play with. I sew and embroider and would like to add embroidery to some of the sewn books in Chapter 5.Chapter 4 focuses on decorating papers for using in your books. Several methods of adding decorative patterns and color to paper using household items are provided including soap bubbles, salt, and shaving cream marbling. Instructions are also provided for Suminagashi, a Japanese paper marbling technique. Information is also provided about how to make paste papers, and how to use them to make book covers.I think that these projects would be a lot of fun to try with kids and that the techniques shown would be fun for an adult.
