Dr. Schroeder is one of the grand old men of speech technology. He started work at Bell Labs in '54, and by the mid '60s knew more about speech than most researchers around 2000. And he's a polymath, a generalist. And he's funny. Here he presents for you everything that he knows about speech. A graduate-level textbook spiced up by biographical asides, this covers a wide ranging grab-bag of material. It is most useful as an overview to the biological-based mathematics of the vocal tract, although much more is included. Written for practising engineers already in the field, the professor assumes easy familiarity with frequency equations, cepstrums, eigenvalues, etc. and moves forward from there. It's like getting a lecture from Einstein, a bit chewy and wide-ranging. It is good for filling in some of the finer details of how things work, and to get a feel for the history of the field.Written in 1999, leaves out recent advances of course. This book is a useful complement to the other grand old men, Rabiner & Schafer's Digital Speech Processing, which should probably be read first.
