Sloan has put together beautiful photographs of a wide range of decorative styles and made her book that more interesting by approaching her subject from the point of view of a present-day practitioner of this (underappreciated!) art form. It will be interesting to the craftsperson but also to anyone who appreciates the beauty of decorative painting and its extraordinary variety thoughout different cultures and throughout the ages.
interesting even if the ideas and techniques are not for beginners
I don't know what I was expecting when I ordered this. I honestly must not have paid much attention because when it came and I saw it was a hardback book I was taken aback. It is filled with nice photographs of antique furniture that has been painted. Most of it is very complex - but some are simple. I feel like if I had seen it in person then I seriously doubt I would have bought it. I could send it back - but I won't. I'll study it further and see if I can actually use it to help me with my painting designs. I could possibly change my mind later on. I think I was expecting a book that was similar to some of the other books the author has put out. The designs shown are very advanced I'd say. So maybe they are intimidating to me. Just make sure this is what you want. That's all. I'm not saying it's a bad book. I'd highly recommend looking at a copy first. Unless you are a collector of all of Annie Sloan's books. If you are - then go for it. Happy painting!
I was disappointed in a way - I was hoping for Annie Sloan's designs and information on using the chalk paint. This is not what I expected. It is useful, however. Gut I would rather it be all Annie.
