I have been building things most of my life, custom vans, DC-10's, lumber yard work, nuclear power plant operations, home remodels and built many sheds and additions. More details in the about the author page. I hope that you will purchase this book and use it to guide you through this woodworking project with plans and directions. You should truly have fun with it and a sense of pride when complete. EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK Often, we find the new flat screen monitors seem to sit too low on our computer desks. Here is a simple home project that most anyone can build themselves. Yes even the ladies. With good instruction and photographs of my example you will see everything that you will be doing. Give it a try; you will be surprised how much fun you can have. You will also experience a great feeling of accomplishment once complete. The base of her monitor is 11 3/4 in wide and 6 ¼ in deep. So I figured a riser size of 13 in X 8 in would be plenty and we needed a height of 5 and 3/4 in. Since I am one of those guys that is always making or building something I had a piece of ¾ in pine handy along with a piece of 1/8th in paneling for the top and drawer box. I will be describing how to make 2 stands one exactly as I did and the same stand using a piece of 1 in X 6 in X 10 foot pine shelving board available from any home supply store that also sells lumber or a lumber yard. NOTE ABOUT Lumber Dimensional: Typical construction wood (lumber) cut and surfaced with rounded edges. Dimensional lumber is normally ½ inch less that the called size i.e. a 2 x 4 is normally, when measured 1 ½ inch x 3 ½ inch just as a 4 x 4 will measure 3 ½ x 3 ½ inches. The third number in dimensional lumber will be the length i.e. a 4 x 4 x 8 will be 3 ½ inch x 3 ½ inch x 8 feet, notice the length will not be short. In this case 1 in X 12 in pine will be a net size of 3/4 inch thick and 11 ½ inch wide likewise a piece of 6 inch pine shelving will be just 5 ½ inch wide and still ¾ in thick. Using your saw. When using a power saw on a finished project you should set the depth of your saw cut to about 1/8th to 3/16th more that the thickness of the wood. This will give you less chance for splintering or blow out of the material making for less sanding and filling. A sharp blade will also make a huge difference. I always like to check my saw square against my speed square before starting a project. It is also good practice to cut about a ¼ in. off the end of your board as this will square the board so all of your cuts will continue to be square. Now let’s put it all together. I used glue and screws to assemble mine you can also do this with finish nails but I still recommend gluing and pre-drilling also. I drilled and counter sunk 2 holes in the back side of both end panels ¾ in. in from the top and bottom. Then drilled and counter sunk another hole 1/2 in. down from the top on the front end of the side panel. Next drill 2 holes along the bottom of each side panel for the drawer slides. These are 3/8th in. up from the bottom edge and 1 ½ in. in from the back end and 2 in. in from the front. Here is second option that should be the least expensive if buying all of the supplies. I would recommend starting with 1 in. X 6 in. X 10 foot pine shelving material. Most any lumber yard or home improvement store will stock this material. OK, so this project is only a computer monitor stand. But the detail, illustrations, and quality of the text make this one of the best woodworking books on the market. If you are new to woodworking, read this book, build this project, and if you don't need the stand, give it away. The value you receive will be greater than the value of the end result.
