Hearst The Collector

William Randolph Hearst (1863–1951) was one of the most famous men in America in the first half of the 20th century. His life as a newspaper magnate and politician was satirized in Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane, and his home in San Simeon, California, is still one of the most visited house museums in the country.  Hearst the Collector explores another facet of his extraordinary life and notoriety: his phenomenal art collection. During the 1920s and 1930s, he amassed the largest private collections of tapestries, antiquities, silver, and arms and armor of his time. His collection furnished six palatial residences. Hearst the Collector takes the reader inside each, illustrating with rarely seen historical prints the most interesting pieces from Hearst’s vast holdings, which were dispersed over the years among many museums throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Rijksmueum.

I bought this book at the exhibition in LA. I own many books on the subject of wealthy collectors and I can assure you this one is a steal at this price! It is big and beautifully done with full page black and white period photographs and new color photographs. Many of the period photos have never been published before. The research the author has done is amazing and must have taken years. You will spend as much time reading the footnotes and bibliography as the text itself. I know alot about Hearst and his era and even I learned things from this book. So if you like this subject ( expert or not) and lovely books that document it, then buy this one.

This is a serious and beautiful book about an often misunderstood part of Hearst's life--his goals and passion as an art collector. Both the text and photos are excellent.

I was kind of disappointed, I thought there would be more pictures for the high cost of this book. The B/W pictures are neat, from when WR was alive, but unless your a hardcore fan of the Hearst empire, I'd skip this one.

Mary did a fine job of making a really nice addition to the exhibit of Hearst The Collector that is currently going on at the LACMA. Anyone interested in art and art collecting will find it a good read.

This book never got much traction and I'm not quite sure why? It may not be the definitive book on Hearst's possessions but it certainly has its place. The photos are well done and plentiful and offer a different look at Hearst beyond just San Simeon. I'm glad i made this purchase - admittedly, at a steep discount. Because this book is available at such an attractive price its well worth one's consideration. Hearst - the best example of Gilded Age living, West Coast Style.
