First, I bought this as a used book from .com, a was quite happy with the transaction from the independent seller. The book is amazing, on so many different levels. First, there are the traditional recipes that my Mom's aunts used to make ages ago, when I was a small child. Entrees, sauces, soups, side dishes, and desserts! Oh, the desserts! You know how some tastes linger in your brain like a favorite holiday cookie? Well this cookbook has those old recipes. With careful instructions on what to do to avoid any 'recipe failure.' Second, the photos of the food will make you want to get the pots & pans out. Then there are so many photos of Vienna's historic buildings, its restaurants and some old photos of people that you almost feel like you have been there, and these are from your scrap book. This is a cookbook that you will enjoy using to make the recipes, and also to simply read through for an imaginary journey to Vienna.
A lovely, well photographed book, but there is really nothing new in the recipe department. If you have a lot of German and/or Austrian cookbooks, this may not be the one for you. If you are new to cooking from that region of the world, this book would be a nice addition to the bookshelf.
What a beautiful book this is! The photos are gorgeous, and it's full of interesting anecdotes about Viennese culture and history. My only problem is that I've been so caught up in reading the stories and admiring the images that I haven't actually cooked anything from it yet. This would make a fabulous holiday gift for anyone interested in Viennese food or culture.
