The paperback book is large format(13 5/8 x 10 1/2). It's layout is in progressive sections from tree to projects that you can build and everything in between. Pages 7 - 308 are from the wood(tree) to finishing. Pages 307 - 516 are projects for the beginner to the master craftsman. If you was to know what the best woods for the outdoor, its there. If you want to know how to setup a band saw, its there. How about using a spray gun, its there. Want to know how it make an inlay, its there. I liked the section on hand tools as my dad left me some of his old hand tools. He had two hand planes and I thought I could use them but I did not know how to use them. The information in the book was good enough to me to determine that the planes were not in usable condition. The screws holding the frog on one are stripped and the other was welded back together at the throat. The information is timeless and appears to be articles written and published in the past issues of Fine Woodworking magazine all in one place.
I have this from the library and wow, what an unfortunate publication! The idea to gather Fine Woodworking articles all together is good, it is how they did it that is bad.The scope of information in it is immense, BUT the paper is newsprint, the format is too big and floppy to hold and read, the printing and photos are poor quality and the print size tiny, except for the giant page numbers. Even the ink on the title page, does not fill the letters completely, but looks like they were run through a poor quality copier!.The index does not list everything in this book. You will NEVER EVER find the information you want in this book. It didn't take much reading and then looking in the index to realize what I was looking at was not listed in the index. So unless you can read and remember it all, you will never re-find important details.Very uncharacteristic of Fine Woodworking to have allowed their articles to appear in such a poor fashion.
For someone like myself, just getting back into woodworking after retiring and reestablishing a shop, this is an incredible resource for putting a shop together, for the usefulness and application of various tols, for ways in which to work with wood, and for a variety of woodworking projects and techniques. Yes, it's big and bulky, and the quality of the paper and ink leave something to be desired (for those of my generation think Whole Earth Catalog), but the 500 plus pages of content are a bargain for the price. Highly recommended.
This book is filled with good information, but sadly the presentation is very poor. For starters, this book is rife with typographical errors, crummy photography and prints, and in some cases, header blocks and graphs filled with Greek characters used by designers as filler text. There are many references to images or diagrams which simply do not exist and poorly captioned tutorials which make following directions nearly impossible. The book feels like a simple collection of articles ripped from Fine Woodworking magazine with no context or references. It seems that blocks of text were simply cut and pasted with no re-reading for accuracy or quality. The contents are very comprehensive and with some editorial oversight, this book could be an essential reference guide for woodworkers. As it is now, it's nothing more than a general knowledge anomaly and not worth investing in for the shop.
I think this book is one of the best published on working with wood, but it does have flaws. The pictures are not good. They were probably taken for publication on slick paper, like Fine Woodworking Magazine, and were not changed when they went to newsprint for this book. Newsprint requires a much lighter photograph with less contrast to print properly. In woodworking, photographs are important in understanding the process being described. “One picture is worth a thousand words” is no joke.Nonetheless, the pictures are not totally black. They are just hard to decipher in some cases. The size of the book in inconvenient, making it hard to read and hard to put on a bookshelf. Now for the good part. The information is nonpareil. I can’t think of another book on woodworking where so much information – both basic and advanced – is compiled in one place. While a bit of the information may be questionable, after all it is a series of articles expressing each person’s point of view on how to do something, the vast majority of the techniques and ideas presented are excellent. One article in particular is worth the price of the book. Fine Woodworking tested the strength of wood joints. They were all glued with Tightbond 3 and the testing procedure was first-rate. The half lap joint was the strongest tested, which surprised me. The complete list is remarkable. The half lap took over 1000 pounds of force to break the joint. Many other joints are tested and the results will improve your woodworking.Get the book.AD2
Vast and comprehensive with tons of very good and useful information about wood, wood species, its strengths and weaknesses, correct and safe woodworking techniques, optimal joinery, finishing, etc. One could easily say that if he or she read all of this book from cover to cover and digested and retained all of the information it presented, he or she could IMHO be considered as having the equivalent of a PhD in woodworking. It is THAT comprehensive.Yes, it's a very large book physically at approximately 10-1/2" wide by 13-5/8" long by 7/8" thick and yes, the book's 524 pages are of a lower quality like that of a newspaper BUT consider if you will what the ultimate landed cost of a book this size and this exhaustive would be to the purchaser if it were first re-paginated (if you know anything about pagination, maintaining continuity and readability and publishing, that is NOT an easy undertaking, especially with so many drawings, charts and photographs of varying sizes) and then printed on nice white paper and then bound out of sheer necessity into four or five standard-sized volumes instead. For my needs, I'd much rather the low cost, big size and the newspaper pages. It's the information within it that's most important and it's not the sort of book one would take along on a flight or to the doctor's office. In just about a half hour's worth of skimming, I've already learned several insightful things about wood's characteristics and tendencies and also about closely examining an object's finish for irreconcilable flaws BEFORE attempting any type of rejuvenation. No matter what you perceive your knowledge or your skill level to be with regard to woodworking, EVERYONE can learn from this book as it was not researched and written by one individual working alone.
