Pigeon Raising

Pigeon keeping is the art and science of breeding domestic pigeons. People have practiced pigeon keeping for about 10,000 years in almost every part of the world. In that time, mankind has substantially altered the morphology and the behavior of the domesticated descendants of the rock dove to suit his needs for food, aesthetic satisfaction and entertainment. These pigeon houses often contain specially constructed openings to allow the pigeon keeper to give his animals liberty for purposes of exercise while allowing them to re-enter the house without special assistance from the keeper. At the same time these houses are constructed to keep the pigeons safe from predators and inclement weather and give them nesting places in which to raise their squabs. People who breed pigeons are commonly referred to as pigeon fanciers. The hobby is gaining in popularity in the United States, after having waned within the last 50 years. Both the hobby and commercial aspects of keeping pigeons are thriving in other parts of the world. This book provides a guide for raising domestic pigeons for profit.[Note: this pre-1923 publication has been converted from its original format for the Kindle and may contain an occasional defect from the conversion process or from the original publication. ]

Even though I'm giving this 48 page booklet five stars, it could be greatly improved by adding photographs and updating the cost/revenue information.I do appreciate that this book was made available and am grateful that the, apparently, scanned and OCR'd text was, almost entirely, cleaned up and edited, removing most errors and making for a quick and fun read.I highly recommend Pigeon Raising for anyone interested in producing squab meat for home or market.

A wealth of information, even if it's antiquated. I wish I could figure out what "Princess Brown" is/was. She mixes it with crude oil to create a wood preservative. Probably highly toxic now. ;-) Anyway, this book is like a journal of how to and how not to raise pigeons back at the turn of the century. As much as has changed since then, pigeons are still pigeons, so the information is very useful. Illustrations or photos of the different types of pigeons would indeed be awesome.

I really enjoyed the book. It was a good read, nothing difficult. I feel some of the advise has been revised by breeders since this book was based off experience gained around the turn of the 19th century. 1906-1913 roughly. Also focused a lot of commercial breeding, or mass breeding. which I doubt in this day and age too many people are terribly worried about.

Gave me some useful information. This book is better for those going into the commercial side of Pigeons rather than hobby.
