I picked up a copy of this last night and couldn't put it down! I read the whole thing. It's so clear and easy to understand - his writing style makes you feel like he's an old friend leaving you his personal gardening notes. There's no over-your-head jargon in here. He shares personal experiences and follies in the garden that make me feel comfortable trying some new things. His no-nonsense approach was comforting after the information overload from all the websites and other books I've read. This is my first year planting in-ground and I wanted a simple, straightforward book to help me pick the right varieties of plants and to help me know when and how to plant them. While I feel it's a "simple, straightforward" book, it's in no way lacking great, useful information. He covers plants I've never heard of in addition to all of the family garden staples. There are sections on perfecting your soil, what tools you need, irrigation, fertilizing, troubleshooting, composting, and so much more. This is a great resource for newbies and experienced gardeners alike. I like how he specifically addresses the different growing zones within Florida for each plant - North Florida, Central Florida, and South Florida. I didn't realize what a difference there was between the zones in Florida. There's a quick reference section/chart for when to plant what and how far apart, etc.I love the way he instills confidence in the reader - that making mistakes is normal. All-in-all this is just a fantastic resource that I'll be recommending and gifting to friends. Thanks Mr. Bowden for putting out such a great book!
I met Robert at Disney during the Epcot Garden Festival, and he was VERY informative about gardening, and so I bought his book after attending his lecture and I am soooo glad I did! His tips for Florida gardeners are wonderful, and he really taught me alot about how our climate effects what crops we grow, sounds simple, but for years I didn't get that we are basically on an opposite schedule from the NE down here! THANKS ROBERT! My gardens are amazing now!!! :) Hope your daughter's raised garden is doing well!!!
This is as basic as it gets for first time gardeners in Florida. Great information and organized well!
After opening the package, I was reading for about 4 minutes and learned something new about Lima beans, I have a tendency to flip around a lot when I read. Then I started from the beginning of the book, and wow , lots of good info in here for Florida gardening. Awesome pictures, informative, planting schedules and species, pest tables and tips on everything. To many to list. Buy this book if you are interested in starting a garden, or have had one for years in FLorida.
This has been a lifesaver!!! I was planting things when the back of the seed packets were telling me to and some things were SO off!! I was doing everything right- light, soil, nutrition, and getting no results. This has helped me so much and I am feeling so much more positive about all of the things I have growing now. It gives great information about when to plant, which varieties do well in which zones, how to plant them, how they like to be fed, what types of pests they may have and then goes into detail about how to fix each pest for each plant in the back of the book. Cannot say enough nice things about this book! I ended up making a spread sheet of when to plant things and I am just so happy. Well worth the money.
I'm no expert but now I'm no beginner either! This book helped me understand the basics of gardening. Also a good reference of what and when to plant! It divides florida into zones. Half of the book has a fruit or veggie listed per page and talks about how to plant it. The author is interesting and I recommend this for anyone.
I was looking for a book that would help me identify when each vegetable or fruit was ready for harvest. This information was missing in most cases. If you have any knowledge of gardening at all, don't buy this book.
This book is a Florida Gardeners Bible. I love this book and find myself constantly referring to it for help in my garden. It is an easy to use and informative guide that will help even those who can't grow a weed without killing it to produce a Bountiful Garden. I own a signed copy of this book thanks to my wife who ran into him at Orlando City Hall where she works while he was there on business for the City of Orlando's Harry P. Leu Botanical Gardens where he is the Executive Director. I highly recommend you get this book even if it's a used copy. You won't regret it.Guide to Florida Fruit & Vegetable Gardening (Fruit & Vegetable Gardening Guides)
