Louie's Backyard Cookbook: Irrisistible Island Dishes And The Best Ocean View In Key West (Roadfood Cookbook)

Key West is a world apart. People come for one reason or another and never want to leave. Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, and Jimmy Buffett are well known. Lesser known?except to Louie's regulars?are Phil Tenney, Doug Shook, Ben Harris, Darlene Ciulla, and others, all of whom call Louie's "our home and our family." What marks the food at Louie's backyard is innovation. Chef Doug Shook likes to create new variations daily. "Inventing is the joy of cooking," he says, Which means the recipes in The Louie's Backyard Cookbook are the best of many recipes Shook has created over the years. They are for people who enjoy the entire process of creating a meal, from procuring the ingredients to  making  a handsome presentation of a finished dish. The Louie's Backyard Cookbook contains not only 150 of Doug Shook's most creative recipes, but through photos and stories it takes you behind the scenes to learn about the restaurant and the Key West culture that lures people with its bauty and keeps them with its liberty. The Louie's Backyard Cookbook is the next best thing to experiencing the islands themselves.

The collaborative effort of Jane Stern, Michael Stern, and Doug Shook, The Louie's Backyard Cookbook wonderfully showcases island cuisine recipes of Key West that made the Louie's Backyard Restaurant an innovative trailblazer of gourmet dining. The more than 150 recipes by Doug Shook range from Mango Slaw, to Chilled Celery Root Soup, Zucchini Spoonbread, Ginger Rhubarb Cobbler to pack the pages of this "user-friendly" cookbook of delightful, classy, taste-tested Key West restaurant sensations.

I purchased the book as a present for my son who is an Executive Chef. His restaurant features a take on Southern cooking, his chicken and dumplings are outstanding. This book certainly hit the mark I am very glad that I purchased it.I confess that after reading the book, which I did give to my son, I decided to purchase a copy for myself. I truly enjoyed the book, EZ read, and the recipes are over the top. Thank you Louie's Backyard for sharing.Key West and Louie's Backyard is now added to my bucket list.

A fun cookbook to read and heaven forbid, actually use to cook a memorable meal. Southern cooking can be very fattening, heavy, unhealthy. But Louie adds pizzazz to creative cooking in the deep south. I am particularly fond of cookbooks from famous bakeries or restaurants because the recipes have been fine-tuned to please many people or they would not be in business.

Reading Louie's Backyard Cookbook is like waking up in Southern Florida, having your favorite gourmet coffee with maybe a splash of adult fortifier, then strapping on your favorite Salomon shoes, cinching your North Face running shorts and stepping off the porch into freshly mowed grass as the sun begins to burn off the morning mist. Your nose heads for the scents wafting through the air from the indescribably luscious eateries dotting Key West like a handful of diamonds thrown in no particular pattern and knowing that fun awaits. Thanks Michael Stern for bring Louie's and Key West to life. You will like this book folks if you like eating fine food as you live out a travelogue.

Worth is just for the shrimp & grits recipe. We take a road trip to Key West every year for the Minimal Regatta. Raced seven years, never won, but Louie's always does. Best food on the island.

Lived one block from Louie's for a few years. We could walk over, go upstairs and love the view and the food and libations. All SO good!If you go to Key West you HAVE to visit Louie's! Cec Pelke

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Key West. Fun to have the cookbook, too
