If you are a DIYer that wants to build their own masonry heater, this is the book to buy. The author provides clear language, with decent photos, and a bit of the theory necessary to construct a functional masonry heater in a very concise format.There are other books available - for significantly more money - with great ideas, concepts, and photos, but none that actually TELL you how to complete the project. They all assume that this type of project is far beyond the reach of the average person. This one doesn't make that assumption. The instructions are here. You get to read them and decide for yourself. :)The project that I'm taking on is a smaller scale heater than the one described here - a small heater for a workshop/man cave on my property. If you are also looking to do something smaller, I suggest that you google "The Cabin Stove Masonry Heater" and read that article. That in conjunction with this book will fill in some blanks for you.The only place where I might do things a little differently than the author is to use dry refractory mortar mix as opposed to the premix. Either is suitable, but the premixed type can fail if it gets wet, even after its set. In my setting, that is not an acceptable risk.
Not enough details, and certainly not enough pictures to use this guide to build a contra flow wood heater. The transition of exhaust gas chambers through the unit is not shown sufficiently, and graphics to show the schematics of the unit should be included. A good "taste" of a contra flow unit at best.

I have read this book seven or eight times. There is sound advise and good pictures to help with the visual. I'm going to build a masonry heater. Starting to collect parts now.
Mr. George is amazing to me as I absorb another of his master creations. This book is so well written and illustrated that maybe even I could now build my own Rustic Masonry Heater/Pizza Oven, EXCEPT, I live in an apartment:/ But when I or anybody who has access to this book, dares(with trepidation abounding) to build a beautiful, practical heater/oven like George's, these well written, very specific instructions will lend assurance and courage to the heart of that builder.
