Unlike the wiring book that B&D has, this is more along the line of how to fix a faucet. The installs shown in the book are only for existing construction. If you want to build something from the ground up you might be able to do it from the information in this book but some of the items are left out... Like: "How far from the wall do you place the toilet flange?"
I use to be a tool runner for a plumber for many years. Even though I have seen things done, I always doubt myself when doing it on my own. My main problem was the Lowes/Home Depot daze and confusion that occurred when I got to the plumbing section and needed just a few things. I would think I knew what I was doing until I saw 30 different options, then to make you doubt yourself even more they will put parts that are for the same thing on different aisles which causes you to go, “maybe I can’t connect CPVC to PEX”. This book is up to date and covered almost everything. The only thing it didn’t mention was that push-to-connect fittings come with a little white tube inside that you only use for PEX and remove for Copper or CPVC. I went through this whole book in one sitting and plan to go over some of the sections in more detail the next time I get bored. Knowledge is power and this book gives you plenty. It even covers installing a tank less hot water heater if you so choose to do so. My only issue there would be installing the vent pipe to the outside which this book gives you instruction on but how could they know I couldn’t do carpentry if my life depended on it. This book paid for itself in just the amount of time I will save at the home improvement store trying to guess what I need. It even confirmed my method of buying more than you need and anything you think you might need and returning it later.
I'm new to the world of Diy projects. My upstairs bathroom was build in the 50s and hasn't been touched since. I decided to try and fix it up myself but I don't know the first thing about plumbing. I bought this book because I've gotten some of their other books and liked them. But I was a little disappointed, it didn't have more details. It tells you how to install stuff and fix some problem, but doesn't have much on actual plumbing. I don't know the difference between different pipes or how to put them together and this book doesn't really explain. I don't need to know how to install a shower stall I need to know how to replace old pipes.
Excellent pictures showing how to perform tasks, informative on the tools and parts involved getting the job done. Very useful reference on plumbing. One can sit down to review a task where it is broken down into discrete steps. The book is a very good investment for the diy'er.
Read the book over a couple of days. Very easy to understand for anyone that would have minimal knowledge to start with. I will be referring to it for any future home repairs! Black and decker does a great job with books like these.
The B&D series are always good--well illustrated, straight-forward, not a lot of jargon or assumption that I have any large amount of pre-existing knowledge or background. Nevertheless, for more advanced types, I think it also offers a few helpful tips. For the novice, I found it an essential reference.
While this book is ok, it doesn't go into as much detail as I had hoped it would. I don't want to ask a guy for help with my plumbing projects, but I'm afraid I'll still need to. I gave it four stars because it does go through quite a few applications and gives you the gist of each.
If you are a do it yourself this the best book on the market as far as I'm concerned. The graphic are especially good. If you want to change a faucet out or replace a bathroom fixture this book will help you do it. If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself-- call a plumber.
