When I first started chip carving about 18 months ago, I bought this book. It is full of good instructions and how-to's. Great for a new carver.
This is the textbook I used to teach myself chip carving. There are plenty of good color pictures that shows basic techniques, help you visualize your hand positions, and how to diagnose your mistakes. If you follow the exercises step by step, you can learn the basics pretty quickly with good foundation. There are a few projects and patterns you can follow which are fun to do for practical objects. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is new to this art.
The book's title doesn't do the book justice. I have read most of the book (I have not got to the projects yet) and I am delighted with it. It contains numerous beautiful examples and most of the writing is extremely clear. The pictures and their captions read remarkably-well on their own (too). I think that the book is a bargain for anyone interested in learning chip carving technique.Update: It turns out I didn't get very excited about any of the 7 projects at the end of the book. But I don't mind. I got some great "lessons" from the book.
Highly recommend this book to get you started. Great instructions! I would definitely recommend a mini, or small chip knife for those with smaller hands, or females...this will save you some time, effort and money.
I find this book very helpful it starting out in wood carving, You'll learn how to care for your tools, how to select the wood to use, how to put a pattern on the wood, It also can be used for reference later on. It's a great book to read before you jump into something you may know nothing about. Remember to use proper safety practices when using any type of tools.
didn't spend enough time on basic patterns and too much time on very ornate and complicated art. I did learn a lot.
This has been a wonderful book to help a learner! Just starting this type of wood carving, so really like the info in this book. Easy to understand and good illustrations too!
My first book on chip carving and it is one that I would highly recommend for anyone attempting chip carving or for learning how to use knives in other carving projects.
