I can only express how disappointing I felt when I read this book. It has detailed information on tools and burrs, but when it comes to power carving techniques, it only has a couple of pages. It spends most of the techniques pages on how to carve feathers. The information on feathers takes about 3 different articles and several pages. The projects are OK, but it gets short on techniques. If you are interested in carving birds, this book may help you. If you are not, don't even bother. For me, it is a waste of money! I'd like to have it back!
Guess I'll still use my knives, gouges and chisels but this book shows you what tools to use and how to use them to get amazing and fast results. I have a $900 set of German made tools and haven't used any of them since I went to power carving.
The "look inside" feature is nice. With that said, in the table of contents, it lists "Black Bear" on page 140. There are a few pictures of a nice Black Bear carving on page 140 but the instructions are dismal. All the other projects were nicely constructed on a step-by-step basis, but this one, though listed as advanced, was presented with a very lazy method. There is a lot of nice information in the rest of this book, but the Black Bear project was, in my opinion, weak enough to bring the book down.
Not as specific as I would have liked but has some good stuff, Not really a "manual" just gives ideas. Wanted more about using specific bits, etc. Has some very good info tho' and is somewhat useful.
This book covers all the major points to producing power carved projects. The 16 favorite projects are excellent and cover the spectrum from beginner to serious advanced carving. The book has excellent illustrations and notes on technique that I find helpful as a novice carver.
Having been a carver for years I used this book to catchg up on the new ways of carving. It was very informational. and a good book for experts and beginners alilke.
Help with a review of basics. Gave me a better understanding using power tools in carving.
Got this book to see if using a powertool for carving would be possible for me. This book is great in terms of detail and tool applications, not just for bird carving but other wood carving projects as well.
